First nice place south of Atlanta to stop?

DW is hinting that she wants to stop on the drive down to Florida this year instead of going straight through.:sad2: Coming from SW MI, our drive is about 20 hours including quick stops. I know how important it is to get through Atlanta in non-rush hour times, but 12+ hours to get through there may be pushing it to not leave really early (plus avoid Indy morning rush) and still get there early enough to get a good night's sleep with the three kids. What is the first nice town to stop in after Atlanta on 75? Any recomendations too if you know of a hotel that fits a family of five easily and isn't too expensive...under $100 would be great but possibly unrealistic.

Someone (sorry I don't remember who) gave me this link on the 2000+ thread:

I think it will be helpful. We are also a family of 5 looking to stop no more than an hour outside (south) of Atlanta.

Someone else suggested the Comfort Suites in Bryon. I would like a Hampton Inn as we get points so I have not decided yet.

The first place southbound out of Atlanta I would stop is Locust Grove, exit 212 maybe 45 minutes depending on traffic from downtown Atlanta, with a fairly new Comfort Suites, among other lodging chains. Byron has another nice Comfort Suites at exit 149.

Either Comfort Suites should be at or just below $100; Each room has a couch in addition to the standard two queen beds (or 1 king, I suppose). I can't remember if the couch makes a bed or not, but it might be a good choice for your size family.

We stopped at Valdosta on our way down last year. I don't remember how far past ATL it was... but I do know it was just north of the FL border. It only left about 3.5 hours to drive the next day. We had a leisurely breakfast and got to the BCVs at about 11:30.

Stayed at a very nice Courtyard by Marriott.

I would highly recommend the Hampton Inn & Suites Valdosta/Conference Center and it's located off exit 16 in Valdosta, Georgia.

The Courtyard By Marriott you stayed at, was it located off exit 18? We are thinking of staying there this August because we have enough Marriott points for a free night stay.

It is the only Courtyard in Valdosta I believe, so that should be it. My wife worked for a Marriott at the time so we stayed there for 19.50 per room. Our other Marriott option was in another town about an hour north of there... but I am drawing a blank on that. We are very glad we kept going that day to get there. Lots of food options in the area, easy highway access, and makes for a short drive the next morning to WDW!

For us I think Voldosta will be too far. It looks like it is another 200 miles from Atlanta. We won't get into Atlanta until around 9pm so I don't want to go another 3 hours after that.

Anyone have thoughts on Macon? That looks like about an hour outside of Atlanta. Is there any place around there that is clean/safe/around $100 with a pool and breakfast. (I know I want it all)

Thanks for your reply and we have stayed in Valdosta before, so we know it's a good place to stop for the night.

We stayed at a Hampton Inn in Macon GA...I think it was located on Eisenhower Drive. It is located on 475 but really convenient. You get off of 75 onto 475 and the hotel is right there. Then you hop back on 475 for a few more miles and get right back on 75S.

It was clean and they had free breakfast. (Cereal, some hot items, make your own waffles, fruit, bagels, et)

Our room cost about $110 and included a king size bed and a pull out couch bed.

My kids were 5, 5 and 7 and it fit us just fine for 1 night.

From Metro Detroit it took us 14 hours to get there with numerous bathroom stops.

The next day it took us about 5.5 hours to get to Disney.
