First names you dislike

Zoe, Zoey...since I went to school with a Zoe who I thought was snobby.
Chloe...since it sould like Zoe. Lol

I use to hate the name Martin since I had a few Martin's pick on me as a child. Then I married a man with the middle name Martin. Lol. If we had a boy, we would have used it as a middle name.

Also Carl, for the same reason. Lots of bullies named Carl as a kid.

My list is too long to put here; I was a teacher. Between the few 'less liked' students over the years there was the endless number of over-used popular names.

Since DH was a teacher also it did make choosing a name for DS a bit harder!

Sometimes a name is all about *who* you know with that name, and unfortunately, I haven't met one I've liked yet. At least in my town, and I know 3 of them between the ages of 10-17, every one of them is an entitled brat, especially the 17 year old. Ruined the name for me forever!

YMMV!
Totally. I chose DS's name because I had once known someone by that name who I though was super-winsome, kind and smart. It's not a very common name these days but it was apparently trendy in the 60's.

Boy=Harvey. There's a boy in my daughter's daycare with that name & I cringed when I saw it written on the cubby next to her.
Girl=Tiffany. Just hard to take seriously for some reason.

When I was in school a girls name was gay. A strange first name

My mother has told me numerous times this was the original name she picked for me and changed her mind at the last minute. My actual name is boring and overused and I am darn glad she suddenly changed her mind. I grew up in the 80s.

My daughter had a little girl in her 1st grade class named "Texana", like the lake between Texas and Louisiana. I always thought it was cute but no one I've ever talked to about it liked it. I think because they think "Tex-Anna". I also had a friend with two sons - Austin and Houston. That was weird. Yes, I live in TX.
I think that is a great name! I had a great grandmother named Texana Mentoria and I just think it has a uniquely beautiful ring to it! Thanks for sharing! <3

I was named after a local celebrities wife from the 50's. I have always hated my name. I have always said my name and then spelled it for people and they still get it wrong. Even my in-laws never called me by the right name the whole time they were alive. I never get cranky if someone says my name wrong, life it too short.

My grandmother was named Lavina and she always hated it. Not long ago I heard someone on TV with her name and was surprised.

I have a friend whose granddaughter was named Beulah. Every time I see her and think who would do that to that lovely child.

I am another one who dislikes old names. When I hear the name Bertha, all I can think of is this song.

I too am tired of "cute" spellings!

First one that comes to mind... Madison I like the name, I think it is very nice.

However, I have seen "Madisyn", "Madisen"... geez come on, that is just silly.

I am just waiting to see if somebody will name a girl "Ptara".... silent P in front of Tara. (think pterodactyl)
I was at a restaurant the other night. Our server's name was Aliceson. I also recently read an article about a child named Knatalye.

My DGD's name is Kaitlyn. Her mother calls her Kait. But I call her Kate. I just can't wrap my brain around Kait.

When I was in school a girls name was gay. A strange first name
When I was a teen (a long time ago!), I lived in Essex County, Ontario, which has a fairly high population of people of French-Canadian descent. Gay was a popular BOY'S name at the time (this was just before it became a synonym for homosexual). I think it was an Anglicization of the French name Guy, which is pronounced "Hard-G - ee" and for some reason got translated to Gay rather than Guy. So in high school I knew several boys named Gay, and we actually had a male teacher whose name was Gay Queen. (Seriously!) Of course just about the time these boys were hitting high school, Gay took on a whole new meaning, and a lot of them were starting to use their middle names instead! Clare was another common boy's name in the area, again because it is a French boy's name. Names do not always translate well!

A name I would hate to have? Ursula.

Girl's names I hate:
Peggy (*personal reasons lol).
Stripper names: Tiffany, Candi, Gigi, Fifi, Bambi
Gender ambiguous names: Hayden, Taylor, Morgan, Peyton, Kendall, Cameron (Kamryn), Kennedy, Tommi,
Made up names, including those with spellings so unusual that almost everyone will spell them incorrectly: Natur'elle, Alivia, Aimee
Any name associated with the Kardashians

My favorite girls names are Madeline and Natalie, Libby

Declan - I can stand pretty much any boy name except that one.

My first son has a name that starts with D. For the first few days of his life I kept calling him Declan. I have no idea why as it certainly wasn't one DH and I ever mentioned or considered before DS' birth. I really dislike the name Declan, so I'm glad I finally got my own child's name right eventually!

Both my boys have normal names that have come in and out of popularity over the years. There was only one other kid with their names in their entire school the eight years they were they there - and they just happened to be in the same grade level as their same name counterpart. Unfortunately, both of the other boys were awful, horrible kids. The staff couldn't stand them; the other parents couldn't stand them; most of the other kids couldn't stand them. Not surprisingly, their families were friends. Luckily the younger of the two moved to another school in grade one. In the meantime, my boys were known as Good-Dollar and Good-Mite, whilst the others were known as Bad-Dollar and Bad-Mite. Had I known these kids before I had my own children I doubt I'd have picked the names for my kids!

Come to think of it, there was only one other person with my name when I was in primary school too, and she was in my grade. Just like my kids' situation, she was a less than pleasant child, so we had another Good-Dollarmite and Bad-Dollarmite situation.

That was a very common ladies' name in Australia and New Zealand (where I'm from) up until about 30 years ago.

Sometimes a name is all about *who* you know with that name,!

Very true. I hate, hate, hate, the name Maree with an unbridled passion due to a revolting girl I knew in high school.

I also dislike George as it reminds me a of a boy from primary school who used to pick his nose and then eat it. For some reason every time I hear that name I also think of a fat, round, little boy similar to Augustus Gloop from 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.

Oh my, my boys have had some winners in their school classes, one I still can't get over - Serenity.
All I can think when I hear that name is George's Dad screaming 'Serenity Now!'.

Also, one of my sons is named Nathaniel. WHY OH WHY do people think that is synonymous with Nathan??? Two totally different names, ugh!

I may not like some names, but I am certainly not going to tell people not to name their own kids whatever they want them named.

I like a lot of the names some of you are saying are "weird" or saying, "just don't."

I like a lot of nicknames, esp. those that start with a Z. I can't tell you why, but I have friends who have named their babies Alexander but call them "Zander." I have another friend whose daughter is Suzanna and they call her "Zanna." I really like those names.

My given name is one of these and I totally agree. Please don't feminize a boy's name with an "a".

I'm lucky I'm called "Robin". My mom used to call me "Bobby" and the aunt I was named after was called "Bert". *shudder*

My DD is named after her grandmother "Cecile" but even that was too masculine for me (too close to Cecil+ia). We shortened it to "Celia" ... hoping there were no nasty nicknames. WRONG! She has been known as "CeeCee" and "C" most of her life. I even refer to her as "C" or "Miss C" sometimes. *sigh*

One of my closest friends is named Roberta. She has always gone by Robin, but those of us who are closest to her sometimes call her Rob. She doesn't mind at all. She even signs some of her emails with Rob.
