Do we make ADR's through Member Services or through the normal route?

You can, but I usually use the regular dining line. Whatever is best for you. If you need to book something popular, like Cinderella's Castle, you'll want to use the dining line, as they open earlier in the day than Member Services.

Have your DVC reservation number handy, as Disney has done some integration to their computer systems, and Dining can now pull up DVC reservations.

Member services has the advantage of being toll free, but if you have nationwide free long distance, you might want to call the toll lines, otherwise MS has to pay for the 800 call anyway.

I also use the regular dining line since they are open longer hours. Plus if I want to get one of the hard to get reservations, MS will open long after those prime times are gone.

It's our 1st DVC trip as well and I have the same question so thanks to rutgers1 for asking it.

So these look like the only advantages of booking through Member services?

Apart from their opening later and so not having as good a shot at the popular bookings, are there any other disadvantages of booking through Member services? I was wondering whether the MS CMs know as much about the restaurants and the booking system as the CMs at dining services? Also are hold times comparable?

It depends upon the season. Member Services can have longer hold times than Dining, and Dining can have longer hold times than DVC. And sometimes, DVC transfers you to Dining anyway, making for an even longer hold. Unless I needed the toll free number, personally, I'd book through Dining.
