We do pictures next to our maple tree to see how they have grown every year. A new outfit and a little note in the lunch box wishing them a good first day. Then we go out to Chili's for dinner and they tell us all about their first day.
First day picture outside on the front steps or inside if it rains (last year it did). A little note in her lunchbox. First day is a crazy day for us since it is also my first day and occasionally it is my husband's first day (this year he starts earlier than us).
First day of school sometimes correlates with DD or DH's birthdays. A little more festive on those days.
Our first day is on a thursday, and its only a 1/2 day for k-5, so when i was in those grades, my dad would take me to mcdonalds as a treat for the day
The first day of school, I take off work and bake cookies ... from scratch. It is the one time a year that I take the time to bake without a box, and my kids love it. When they get home from school, we have cookies and milk while talking about the highlights of their day. Until we moved, the neighbor friends started coming over for it too. It's a fun tradition. Of course every year I end up crying about how fast it's going, so the cookies give me something else to focus on.
I love the white board idea with what they want to be when they grow up. I may have to try that tomorrow!
This, this, this! I am the same way...not necessarily "sad" about back to school, but it's just another time frame that makes me realize how fast things are going. WDW does the same thing to me LOL, it always opens my eyes to how they have changed since the last trip.
One family I know takes individual pictures of each kid holding up the number of fingers for what grade they are going into (5 for fifth grade). Need some extra fingers for grades 11 and 12.
We do First Day Pancakes. They are just like Birthday Pancakes but another excuse to have them.
Pancakes + whipped cream + School color sprinkles + a cherry or strawberry
They usually get a school-related surprise gift (while out shopping for school supplies they choose something impractical and I always say NO. This is what they get.
They always give their teacher a Back-to-School gift. This year the teachers will all get snacks and the Tony Danza teacher book on a ceramic plate shaped like a book. Wrap it in cellophane and tie with ribbons (school colors of course).
I usually do a "Happy 1st Day of School" cake for when they get home and a small gift. Now that they are in 7th and 9th grade their "small" gifts seemed to have gotten more expensive! But I KNOW they look forward to it, even though they would NEVER admit that......but I see the little uptick at the edges of their mouth.
