First day of school -- First day of Swine Flu

Wow! That fact that you have to build yourself up by bringing someone else down indicates self confidence and self esteem issues. My husband and I have several family members, including our parents, who are surgeons and nurses and I have never once heard any of them gloat that they have "saved thousands of lives." That statement is laughable :rotfl2: They know the work they do is life-saving and that in itself is satisfaction enough.

I do agree with you on one point and that is that one of the main reasons health care costs are so high is because of misuse of the ER. However, if a person is without health insurance their only option when sick is to go to the ER. I suspect many of the people you see fall into that category. If we want people to stop using the ER as their PCP we need to make health insurance affordable. Until then, I am afraid you will be seeing many more people with illnesses that could be better treated elsewhere.

WOW just wow!!!

A poster attacked me by saying I was uncaring and heartless.
I said I have saved thousands of lives and thats bragging!!!!:rotfl:
I was NOT attacking anyone but answering somebody who didn't like my opinion!!!! Get it.:confused3

This is a WDW message board.
You don't know anything about me.

To infer that I am anything without knowing me on a personal level is ludicrous and scary. You cant judge anybodies emotions from written words on a message board.

I am proud of the work I have done and that is my comment. If you think its braggging....GOOD.;) Ive worked very, very hard in research and human life.
If I was a teacher(which I am) would you criticize me for my accomplishments? Or a senator? Or a Dr.?

By the way. My Uncle was a famous surgeon at Boston Mass General and bragged all the time how many lives he saved.:hug:
In fact I have yet to meet a surgeon who doesn't have the "God complex". Does that make them less of a surgeon or humanitarian?

Boy I'm glad I didn't list all my awards Ive won!:laughing::laughing::rotfl::rotfl:

Now let me go gloat while I plan my next WDW trip!:love::woohoo::dance3::rolleyes1

Boy do I agree with this.

True story: One of my colleagues at work has been absent more then 7 days in a year. She got the flu and was out a week. She had a Dr's. note. My department has suspended her for 3 days. If she calls in sick one more time she is FIRED!!!:scared1:

WE WORK IN A HOSPITAL!!!!!! On the front lines for gods sake. Do you the public want to be treated by a sick RN because they cant be sick???

Madness.
That's absolutely despicable. Hope I never visit that place. :sad2:

Two things I noticed in your posts.

#1: You never addressed the fact that children and young adults with NO pre-exisiting health conditions have been and are dying from this particular strain of flu - which indicates to me that possibly you aren't as informed as a health care professional "should" be..:confused3

And:

#2: I would be very apprehensive in regards to trusting my health care to someone with such a cavalier attitude - such as the one you have portrayed in your above posts..:sad2:

Perhaps you've had a few bad days - or you're overworked.. :confused Whatever the reason, to ignore known facts - and to brush off others concerns - is really not helpful in terms of the subject of this thread.. Maybe when you're feeling better you can come back and offer some useful insight..:)

C. Ann

I don't have time to educate. Please go to the CDC web site and read for yourself.
There were more deaths in the past few years from other strains of the flu then this one.

C. Ann I'm very informed(and calling me names is no better then what you accused me of).:sad2::sad2: But as I have said before ANY flu is dangerous not just this one.
And I already said as it relates to the ER that ANYBODY with preexisting conditions should be seen .

You have had many posts that I have read. Be careful what you criticize me for as some of YOUR posts have been very nasty! :sad2:

Once again as i said. People/children are better served if they go to there Pediatrician instead of going to ER because they think they have the flu. IF YOU HAVE A PREVIOUS MEDICAL CONDITION AND FEEL BAD THEN PLEASE COME TO ER. Do not take up valuable space at ER that needs to be saved for really sick children/adults that need emergency care.

Flu is a virus. Like a cold virus. Or the AIDS virus. There is no magic pill. Just prevention.
Wash hands. Stay away from crowds. Don't go to ER unless it is an emergency. Stay home if sick. Keep hydrated. Take all prescription meds.
Sorry I'm teaching.

Now. Will you all just let it go. I'm a really nice overworked person who loves my job. But I can also argue a point.

Please go attack someone else. Thanks. My mistake was posting on here to begin with.:headache: PEACE!!!!

I believe all of us on this thread - as well as the Swine Flu thread - have stayed very well informed and are quite aware of reliable sources where we are able access accurate information.. :goodvibes

Having said that, I'm sure you are a "really nice overworked person who loves your job" - so I will refrain from adding to your stress any further and limit my future responses to information that I find helpful, accurate, and in line with the purpose of this thread..:goodvibes

THANK YOU.
(One of my coworkers and friends died yesterday from a massive stroke. He was 59. He didn't even get a chance to retire. My head is not on the flu.
He dedicated his whole life to health care. Yes I would brag about him.)

I'm very sorry to hear that..:sad2:

Understandably, you have something much more important on your mind right now.. My condolences to you and his family..

Right now anything with symptoms of the Swine Flu is going to be considered Swine Flu. The regular flu really isn't in circulation yet- it's almost entirely Swine Flu at the moment. Any case of the flu must be treated as Swine Flu. In fact, states aren't even testing every case. Rather, they are asking that a certain percentage of cases be sent for testing.

My mom is a hospital microbiologist, and I was talking to her today. She was saying that her lab gave her a little bit of grief earlier over the number of kits she ordered to test for H1N1, but they are now going through a kit a day and they are not even in full swing yet. Every doctor is demanding the test (much to her dismay, because you treat it the same and they don't need to know if every single patient has swine flu) despite the fact it takes 2-3 days. They are already swamped!

I had to pick up my son from school yesterday with a 101 fever, chills, coughing and a bad headache (and no, he had none of those symptoms 3 hrs earlier when I put him on the bus). I called the ped's office, and THEY suggested I bring him in to test for the flu and strep.

I was very surprised when the flu test was negative...by the time we got there and they took his temp, it was 103. And the strep was negative as well.

He still feels awful, and only ate anything tonight. I am keeping him home til school goes back next tuesday. All I know is if this isn't the flu, it is very nasty whatever it it.

And again...I wouldn't have dreamed of putting him on the bus if he had felt sick at all.

Aw, the poor thing.

If I were a gambler, I'd be willing to bet some serious money that it was a false negative on the flu test. However, rest and fluids is all you can do, whether it is or isn't. I hope he's better by Tuesday.

Poor kid. They actually had a story on the news here 2 days ago regarding the false negatives on the flu "quick" test with H1N1, apparently it doesn't "test" the same as the more normal variants. This sounds like flu, and I am surprised your dr didn't put him on tamiflu to be on the safe side

I agree...
What did they think it was???

This bothers me. :confused3

2 of my 3 kids at home came down with the headache/sore throat/cough and high fever last Saturday.....got them into the peds on Monday- negative for both H1N1 and strep. DD11 got better by wednesday, but DS13 just kept getting worse. Took him in on Wednesday and again yesterday- diagnosed with pneumonia, had oxygen levels in the low 90s....we almost went to the hospital, but our ped agreed to let us keep him one more day at home on antibiotics. He had a fever of 103, knocked down to about 101, since last Saturday. Finally turning the corner today- he is miserable but getting better.

DS13 is a runner, in top condition, eats well, VERY physically fit. He was the one I least expected to get hit this hard- poor kid hasn't missed more than 2 days of school/year in his entire life. I am suspicious that they missed an H1N1 diagnosis in him.

Interestingly, the junior high had about a 20% absence rate this week, as well......no official sign of H1N1 at my university, but I am seeing students drop like flies. I have a touch of it, so I welcomed the opportunity to stay home with DS and DD.

My DD17 has been walking around wearing a surgical mask and spraying lysol on everything as she walks through the house....unfortunately she started coughing yesterday. I may have to leave town if she gets sick....she is SO dramatic when she doesn't feel well! So far DH is hanging in there....but I think he wishes he could run away at this point. DD21 is away at college- I don't know what I will do if she gets sick, as she is a 12 hour drive away.

If this isn't H1N1, I hate to think how much worse it would be. I haven't seen my DS13 this sick since he had RSV as an infant!

The tests definitely aren't 100%. Did they treat your son with Tamiflu?

...and my 9 year old has a heart murmur which might be considered a preexisting health issue,

Just as a heads up, we were just at Childrens Hospital Boston last week for my DS8's appt with his Cardio Electrophysiologist for some testing and discussion re some upcoming cardiac surgery. I specifically asked him about swine and if my ds's cardiac issues are considered a pre existing condition or in any way put him at greater risk of complications if he happens to come down with it. For the record my ds has 8 moderate VSDs, 1 large ASD, and WPW (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome which is irregular electrical pathways). I was told that his conditions are not the types of pre existing conditions that have been a contributing factor in swine flu deaths. It doesn't mean we didn't have to to be vigilant and watch for symptoms and manage them accordingly but it wasn't something additional we needed to worry about if in fact we do end up dealing with Swine.

You could always put a call into the cardiologist yourself just to double check. I know it was something that was weighing on me, so I am glad I was able to ask and have a lengthy conversation about the specifics of my ds's case & swine.

Around here they are just testing for type A and if you are positive for that, they are saying it's the swine flu as the drs(I've heard of at least 3 that say the same thing) are all saying that 95% of Type A at this time of year is h1n1. I haven't heard of anybody that was actually tested for h1n1 but many that tested positive for type A

This "false negative" thing in the testing that you're talking about. is that with a type A test or an actual h1n1 test? Just curious as to what type of test is having the false negatives.

No tamiflu for any of us. DS13 is on antibiotics, and he is SLOWLY recovering. DH and DD17 seem to have escaped the worst, DD11 is okay, I am miserable after a week. At least we are moving and starting to function and catch up on school work......worst part is that we had the silly math brain teaser to do. The 6th grade math teacher (who is wonderful) has this ridiculous clown who gets himself into trouble that can only be resolved if you figure out the algorithm.....NO parent should have to save BOBO when s/he is down for the flu!!!!

There are now at least 3 kids on the Xcountry team who officially have H1N1...I am guessing we have it/had it, too. I am really wondering what will happen to our huge invitational meet on Saturday....time will tell.
