First day of school and broken wrist advice

Oh goodness! Sounds like she took quite the fall. How is she doing. Did you end up getting x-rays of her foot?

Kids bounce back so quick! My DD fell out of a tree last summer and broke her wrist, right at the growth plate, and they don't cast in the ER here, just wrapped in an ace. She went to an Ortho the next day and he set it in a tem cast because of the swelling, then 3 days later went back in for her real cast, but he found that she needed surgery. So, 6 days later we got to the hospital at 6am and she was wheeled to recovery at noon. All this time the only meds she took was tylenol and motrin. She rode her bike, climbed the same tree, went swimming and fishing, and she also started cheerleading and school. Almost 5 weeks later she had her cast removed. She never missed a beat through this whole ordeal!!! Even though she had a cast from her fingers up to her shoulder for the majority of the summer, with her elbow bent, she never let it stop her from having a blast.

Her foot is fractured. She is in a boot on her left foot and a cast on her right arm. She looks a mess. She isn't in any pain though. She was hula hooping on Saturday. I told her she still needs to take it easy for a little while. The new x-ray of her wrist shows that on of the bones has moved a little bit. He said it was only a slight movement and should be fine as long as it doesn't move anymore. She goes back in two weeks to get a new x-ray and hopefully moved to a shorter cast. Right now it is up to her armpit.

The challenge now is to get her to calm down a bit. She is so mad that she can't do soccer or ballet. She is furious that she can't do roller coasters too.

Thanks for the update and so sorry about her foot. Glad to hear your DD's not in any pain. Like others have posted, kids usually bounce back quickly. Before you know it she will be scoring goals and dancing on her toes again! Let us know how you make out after the next set of x-rays. :dance3:

I think not being able to do stuff is the worst for them. When ds11 broke his wrist and thumb playing basketball back in February dh took him to Ortho to get the cast. I asked what restrictions he had and dh said the doc didn't say any. He played in his basketball games the next two weeks cast and all. When he went back to get the cast off they found a new fracture in the wrist. Apparently he wasn't supposed to do any sports but dh wasn't listening. He ended up with another cast. I don't think he even went out to play until that one came off. I told him he was the only kid I knew that could break a bone while in a cast.
