The previous post about what to wear for the first day of K, got me thinking about something special I can do for my son who is going into 3rd grade and my 2nd son who is starting K after Labor Day! :scared:

Does anyone have any cool ideas or awesome traditions they would like to share?

:) My DS will be going into 1st grade this year. I am huge into traditions...so I started last September 2 of them for celebrating going back to school. 2 days before he goes back we have date with mommy day. We go out to lunch and then go shopping for any school supplies/new clothes needed fro the school year. Also, on the 1st day of school we all go out to dinner as a family to celebrate...DS's choice of course!!!:)

You could start writing a note to your child either on paper or his napkin and stick it in his lunch box everyday. The kids love to have me read their notes to them and then share them with the other kids. I think that it is a wonderful way to let your child know that you are thinking of them during the day. One of the ladies that I work with has a DS that puts notes in her lunch box because he said that it always means so much to him to get a note from her. Isn't that sweet?

I don't do it everyday, but I also do the note on the napkin. I am not sure how I am going to do it this year with two going to school, but the day before school, we have always had a DS 8 day. I guess we'll have to have two days this year - one for DS 8 and one for DD 5!

I always make chocolate chip cookies during the first day, and we have cookies and milk when he gets home. We usually do a healthy snack so this is something a little different.

I do the note on the napkin as well. DS6 couldn't read when he first started kindergarten, so I'd draw simple pictures (a funny face, flowers, our house, a zooming car, etc.) When they were studying a letter of the week, I'd match the picture to whatever the letter was, and write out the word.

As he learned to read I'd write simple sentences (I love you, {DS6} is funny, etc.) He's entering 2nd grade this year, and I tend to tie the drawing/words to any specialty classes they have for the day, activities we'll do after school, etc.

And something I think is kinda cute; he throws out all the garbage from his lunch... except the napkin. He brings it home.
