First cruise, dressing up question

We're going on our first cruise- me, dh, dd 8, ds 4, Wonder 4 day on 9/14. It was quite an effort talking dh and dd into it, so I hope we have fun.

I read all about the dress code, but I have a question anyway. Does anyone ever dress up for dinner? Dd loves to dress up. Would it look really weird if she showed up to dinner in something long and frilly? I don't want her to feel uncomfortable, and she's getting to the age where she notices people look at you strangely if you dress differently than everyone else.

:( Too bad the innocence (maybe obliviousness?) of youth goes so quick nowadays!

Thanks,
Julie

We dressed up for both the semi-formal and the formal nights--DH, me DS5 and DS2. The boys wore tuxedos on the formal night. We saw some people dressed up and some very casual. We liked dressing up!

yes, from what I have heard people do dress up for formal & semiformal night but....I think these are only on the 7-night cruises. From what I have read on these boards, I think the 4 night cruise is a lot less formal.

Still waiting on my 1st cruise so not positive about my anwer, but I have been checking these boards awhile and that seems to be the usual response. Hope you get more experienced answers. :D

I thought on the 4 day the dress up was when you had dinner in Triton's. Kathy

We've cruised twice on the 4-day Wonder. There is no formal or semi-formal night as on the 7 day cruise. Official Disney literature suggests jackets for men at Triton's, and "cruise casual" wear everyplace else (ie., no jeans, shorts, tshirts or tank tops). In actuality, very few men wore jackets at Triton's, and I don't think any of the men wore tuxes. We saw a lot of polo shirts or regular shirts, with or without ties, on the men. Some of the women did dress up more, and it didn't look out of place for them to be wearing long or dressy dresses. I don't really like dressing up that much, and I usually wore a skirt or nice pants and a blouse, as did many other women. I don't think your dd would feel out of place in something long and frilly, as long as she enjoys dressing up, but if she doesn't, I wouldn't make a big thing about it. You'll see everything in the dining rooms. My advice would be not to get hung up on how you dress, let people do what they're comfortable with, and just enjoy yourselves.

Julie,

The most formal night on the 4 day is the night you'll dine in Triton's. The 4 day does not have formal nights for the ship like they do on the 7 day. You'll see just about everything on the 4 day from people who are dressing up, to people who show up looking like slobs. If your dd loves to dress up then let her do it. Think of the great pictures you'll take. Keep an eye out for the Welcome Party (I think the 2nd night) as Mickey and Minnie are dressed up (Mickey in a tux and Minnie in long white dress) that would make some really cute pictures). Speaking of pictures - you don't have to buy the ones they take - they'll let you take ones with your camera as well (or will take one for you).

Enjoy!

sorry...I didn't read the question closely enough...yes you all are right...7 night is the cruise with the semi and formal nights. However, I say even on the shorter cruises if you feel like dressing up go for it!

If she wants to be frilly, let her be frilly! It's all part of the magic and she won't be out of place at all. Enjoy your cruise!

Our 3 & 4 nights were on the Magic before there was a Wonder and before it switched over to the 7 days but we went for a more dressed up look when we were at Lumiere's (Triton's on the Wonder).

So I say go for it! And keep the camera handy. One of my most treasured photos is of my DD (who was 10 at the time) dancing with DH in the atrium. We had gone down a few minutes early to get in line for the formal photo op and the music was playing and the moment just happened!
