OK.... DH and I have been working on weight loss and exercising since the first of Jan. We found a 5K on April 21st and would really like to do it. I want to hear from people who have run a 5K before. How long did it take you the first time? How long did you train for it? What did you do to train for it? Anything would help.

Two years ago, I "did" 7 5k's... at 280 lbs. DD and I mostly walked (quickly)... we ended up finishing before several "runners". Longest time... just under and hour... shortest time... around 45 minutes.

You can absolutely do a 5K in April!

I followed the couch-to-5K program last year. It's a gradual 8 week plan that works you up to running a full 5K. There's a thread here on the WISH board about it going on right now...feel free to jump in!

Good luck, and congrats for taking the first step!

I am doing my first 5K, too! We should follow each others progress!

Dene' WOW!!!! Seven 5K's! You rock! Did the jogging/walking help in weight loss? How is your fitness level now?

Unfortunately, due to 5k's every weekend wiping me out, I stopped exercising during the week... fell off the wagon and put on 50 lbs.... back down about 30 of that now... and I'm only allowing myself to enter 1 5k this time around. :thumbsup2

You can do this for sure! Start out with taking small walks and just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

My first 5k was forever. It improves over time if you keep on putting those steps in. The Couch to 5k is a great way to start.

Best WISHes to you. Let us know how you are progressing.

Friday I rode my bike on the 5K route in my town...GEEZE, it about killed me! Then later that night my girlfriends called to see if I would like to walk...did another 3 miles! Yesterday, I did the 5K again (walking of course). I will start adding the jogging part next week!

WISH ME LUCK!!!!!!

ggeorgiagirl, when is your race? Mine is April 21st. I think DH and I are going to go ahead and do it. The race is a fund raiser for the Habitat for Humanity chapter at our former college about an hour from where we live, so even if I end up walking the whole way it's for a good cause, right?
I have an exercise bike, not a treadmill. It's too cold to go outside to train right now. I've been riding the bike almost every day for over a month and as soon as the weather is decent I'll get outside.
I'd love to know how you're doing. We can keep each other motivated!:cheer2:

OOHH...I really need someone to check in on me! I am such a quitter! I have already paid for my 5K...so...I WILL MAKE IT!

I am doing the 5K @ WDW...the Minnie Marathon has a 5 K on Saturday (may 5th). I can't wait! Afterwards, there is a kids race (for my 4yr old). I am so obsessed with WDW trips...and this is a GREAT excuse to go and also to keep me motivated!

My heater in my house broke this morning and we are about to have a Super Bowl Party! GEEZE!

Love,
Beth

I'm doing my first 5K event next weekend, Feb. 10. Forecast is calling for 30 degrees or below at the start. Yikes! DH & I will be walking the whole time. He has 2 bulging discs in his back so there will be no running for us.

Mom and Beth - you can do it! Even if you have to walk - it's ok. :thumbsup2 You might even find that it's kind of fun. :cool1: After a few of these 5k events, you ought to think about joining the WISH team for a half or full marathon at WDW in the future. :scared1:  :thumbsup2

I am doing my first 5k on Saturday Feb.10.I am excited to see how it goes.i have been doing a lot of walking/running on the treadmill to see what I can do and the fastest was 40 min.:cool1: I know it will be very different outdoors.

I did my first 5K last year at the Minnie, and I started about this time training and had never run before. I tried running 3-4X/week, then started having really bad shin splints and didn't run at all for the month right before the race. I walked at least half the distance, and finished in 38:45. Since then I've done 2 more, and now I'm training with the WISH team for the half marathon in January '08!

Beth - I did the Minnie as an excuse to go to WDW too - everyone thought I was crazy for going all the way there just for a 5K! It made for a really long weekend too, since we drove down and crammed in all 4 parks in addition to the race on Saturday morning.

Good luck to everyone - come join us on the weekly training thread!

Jackie

Susie and Amy, I just wanted to say good luck this week end. Please let us know how your 5Ks went. Can't wait to hear from you.

SUSIE AND AMY!!

How did it go?! I am dying to find out! Was it hard? How was your time?

HUGS

Beth

I am waiting for my friend and then we are on our way!!I will let you know later today how it goes.

I DID IT!!!:cheer2:

It was hard and cold but we really pushed ourselves. We have only been working out since the end of November so this was a huge accomplishment.

First mile-13.05
Second mile-26.24
Third mile-38.52
Finish-39.52

We jogged some(downhill)but walked most of it.My friend is alot taller than me so it really challenged me to keep her pace.I am ready to do it again!!

YEA YEA YEA DISmom!

I am soooooooo excited for you! I am off to do my neighborhood 5K!

Where in GA are you living?

Beth

It was hard but I have a real sense of accomplishment.I have only been back to working out since the end of November.

Are you doing a 5k today?I wasn't sure what you meant by neighborhood 5k.:confused3 Maybe I need to go take a nap.

It was freezing this morning!

OOHH..there is a 5K mapped out in my neighborhood...I just follow the arrows and it will be 5K!

You ROCK! My time today was 51 minutes! That'll NEVER do for the Minnie 5K

Amy - That's a great time, especially for your first time!

Georgiagirl - 51 minutes is a great start. I just checked the results from last year's 5K, and there were at least 50 people with finish times over 51:00, so even if you competed today you wouldn't be last! You have plenty of time to work on your pace - just keep putting in the steps.
