the other day I was at lowes or home depot, and saw these neat little string of lights that imulate fireflies, I thought it was the neates thing!! Myself, DW and the associate talked for a while, and we all came to the conclusion, we just dont see fireflies the much any more:confused:

I grew up chasing these things, and they seemed to be everywhere, but that dosent seem the case now, I cant remember the last time I saw one, sad, hope they are not on their way out

well I told the DW I would like some of this lights for Christmas to string along the camper awning! so Ill have my own fireflies.

Like most insects, they seem to cycle. This summer we had tons of them, right up through September.

I miss them too. We are in CT. for the last 24 years and I don't think I saw more than a couple. SE PA. still gets them though. My grand children were in awe.

I agree, there don't seem to be many in this area either. IIRC, there was some type of study taking place here in Massachusetts over the summer, that consisted of volunteers "counting" how many fireflies they saw in certain areas over different periods of time. Not sure what the results were, perhaps I'll google it. (on a sidenote, how would you know if you're counting the same ones over and over? I'm guessing it's fairly difficult to "tag" them, lol)
I remember as a little girl catching them and keeping them in a jar for a nightlight next to my bed. Such a wonderful time.
Interestingly, when we visited my DS-I-L in Washington DC, she had TONS of them in her yard. When we got home after our weeklong visit, one flew out of my truck. I was hoping it would find another and re-populate my yard, but, no such luck :(
I miss fireflies.

I didn't know until a few days ago that they are similar to lovebugs, in that they only live a day or two. how sad.

My wife and I once went on a 4 wheeling trip and stayed at a state campground in Florida (yes Florida), mass. At night over the field there would be thousands of fireflys ( I mean thousands, it was like looking at a stary sky).

Most amazing thing I have ever seen camping.

My two boys were chasing them around the campground in June on Cape Cod. We camp there several weeks annually for the past 9 years and this was the first year we've seen them down there. I too remember being a little guy and chasing them around every year.

fireflies,,hmmm, sounds dangerous,,
moma always told me don't play with fire or ya might get burned.

I've been in Florida since 1980 and don't think I've seen 1. Grew up in OH and they were all over the place. We camped last year in TN and when we were out walking the dogs at night we saw them. Brought back some great memories. The dogs couldn't figure out what they were.

A dog and fireflies sounds fun.

Disney would be very confused.

He loved the lizards at the fort, kept chasing them all over.

It wa fun meeting you guys and really funny running into you on the monorail on our last day.

It's interesting that my girls don't pay any attention to lizards anymore. They are so used to them, but fireflies amazed them.

Like most insects, they seem to cycle. This summer we had tons of them, right up through September.

We had them here on Long Island too.

One of the first signs of summer... fire flies at dusk. :goodvibes

We usually get TONS of them at my house, all summer long. The kids spend many summer evenings outside catching them.

Now, in Elkmont in the GSMNP, they have the synchronous fireflies every year in June. THAT is a sight to see...and I hope to see it next June.

There is a place in The Great Smokey Mountains National Park that you can go in the late summer or early fall and take a hay ride at night and the fire fly's look like the Vegas strip.

Auntie... I grew up on Long Island (Roslyn and Glen Cove) back in the 50s. The fireflies at night are one of my fondest childhood memories. We would catch them in glass jars, put them on our nite table and go to sleep with them flickering away.
