I saw this excursion on Live with Kelly and it looked like so much fun!! I'd love to read about someone's experience!! :goodvibes

Our family had a great time learning to surf with the Fire Surf School while visiting Aulani in April. The beach is near Aulani and is perfect for learning to surf. Conditions vary, of course. The instructors were great. Very friendly and encouraging. We booked through the excursion desk at Aulani. It was a highlight of our trip!

Thanks!! This sounds so exciting to me, even if I don't "catch a wave", just the thought of trying to surf sounds fun....not to mention learning from hot firefighters!

My brother & husband did this on our trip to Hawaii almost 6 years ago. We stayed at the JW Marriott that is now a neighbor to Aulani. I couldn't do the surf school because I was pregnant. But I did go along and sit on the beach and watched them. We all had a great time. It's one of the things I enjoyed most on the trip!

We took these lessons from Hawaiian Fire surf school in 2010, before Aulani was open. However, it's the same company that you can book through the excursions at Aulani.

I agree, lots of fun, and they have a great spot to learn. However, the lessons are not at Aulani, but at a beach that's not too far. I bring this up because my wife didn't participate and had to drive to the beach where the lessons are, you can't just walk out of Aulani and watch the lessons.

Throughout the lessons they had a photographer taking pictures that you could buy as a slide show when you were finished. We didn't buy it, but it is an option.

Also, I do a lot of outdoor activities and this may have been the most physically intense thing I've done in a long time. The surfing part is easy once you're up on the board, but for me there was a LOT of time paddling back out to the instructors until I got the hang of it. They are very intent on getting everyone on as many waves during the timeslot as possible, so don't think you're going to take it easy. Everytime I rode a wave, or fell of my board, I had one of the instructors yelling at me to paddle back to them to catch another wave. We had a lot of our class sitting on the beach after about the first 1/2 hour as they were physically wiped out.

It's one of the more expensive surf schools, but I felt a certain comfort that they are all trained fire fighters.

I just booked this for our August trip- I booked directly with them- for our family of 4, I think I saved $200 over booking it through Disney. Can't wait to go!! :beach:

We did it on our trip in October, and I would do it again! The instructions were good, and the instructors were so friendly and encouraging. They really wanted to see everyone get up on their boards and they help you over and over as many times as you want to go - with a smile on their face every time!

I was glad at the end to find out that their photographer offered photo CDs so we could have proof that we did it!

I cover it in my Trip report here!

You're welcome! We did not get to keep the rash guard (or shoes). They sell shirts in their shop, so maybe they sell them there - I didn't think to ask!

This was the highlight of our trip also. The kids (DS-21 & DD 17) were picked up at Aulani in a van, and we followed in our car (Disney had no problem with our trailing behind). The beach was about a 20 minute drive from the resort in a secluded camp ground. I kept thinking it would be an awesome place to go camping. :)

Disney provided snacks and drinks and the school provided chairs and a tarp for shade. The lessons were really well done...both my kids got up and surfed as well as all the others in the group. There was a photographer there who took a fabulous photo of my kids with Diamon Head in the background. I would recommend this excursion to everyone. :thumbsup2
