I'm not sure if this is the right board for this question, but don't know where else to ask (sorry, moderators, if I'm in the wrong place)...

Will be traveling with DH and his brother, both volunteer firemen, in August. B-I-L had heard that the actual WDW Fire Department welcomes fire fighters from other communities and gives a tour. Both are interested in doing this.

Has anyone here heard of or experienced such a thing?

TIA :sunny:

My husband is a volunteer also, and I bet he would enjoy that! I'll be looking for the responses! By the way...I see you are from Westchester. I grew up there!

Funny, BYC. I grew up on the island...the OTHER island, that is...Staten. I moved here when I got married to my big-hearted volunteer!

Where is the WDW fire dept.?
DH is FDNY and we always muse at the firehous w/ the giant hose and the one w/ dalmation spots-REEDY CREEK FD. We wonder what would happen to those if they were in NYC or the Bronx. --I think the firemen I know wouldn't want to be in a house like that. They sort od pride themselves on the grit and grunge. :firefight

DH works for a company that does protocol and software for EMS dispatch (911) around the world. They installed their system at Reedy Creek, so we actually know quite a few of the fire department and EMS folks there. They do indeed do tours for those involved in the industry. All you need to do is show up at the main station - the one that's right near the Boardwalk (painted with the dalmatian spots), not the auxiliary station near Downtown/Saratoga Springs. There's actually a reception area and lobby in there and you can just show up for an impromptu tour. If you want something more elaborate, you'd probably need to contact them in advance, but I'm sure they'd be happy to do it!

I grew up in Port Chester. We moved away when I was 12, in 1967. I went back many, many years later to see our old homestead, only to find they had change the name of our town to Rye Brook! Seems part of Port Chester susceded, or something???

Thank you, WDWguru! I will definitely contact them in advance to see what kind of thing they can arrange. DH and BIL are so into it and will take whatever they can get! It's good to know where it is and the name of it, that helps a lot. I was picturing that little "firehouse" in MK where we left our patch last time! Wouldn't take long to tour that facility!

BYC, I didn't know that Rye Brook was once part of Port Chester. When I moved here in 1990, there was already a Rye Brook (I think). You're right, part of it must have seceded at some point, as there is still a Port Chester. We go there all the time for the great Cosco! I've never been to Rye Brook, but I hear it's lovely, I think mostly residential and some corporate office parks. We live on the western side of the county, near the Hudson River, so I'm not too familiar with your old neighborhood.

Happy New Year!

Couple of questions
1. where exactly is the Boardwalk that you are talking about
2. Does anyone know if you can purchase anything with the WDW fire logo on it.
DH, DD, and DSIL are all volunteer firemen here in our community.

Thanks

You can learn more about the Department thru the Reedy Creek Firefighters Union website at http://www.reedycreek.org.
You can also purchase union t-shirts from them. There cost is $20. Just click on Merchandise.

I am not a firefighter but a 9-1-1 dispatcher. My DM needed her BP checked last time we were there...they gave her a tour of the fire house (she loved the kitchen) while I went in the radio room. Think they wanted to keep me...nice to be wanted!

Dispatchers are the same the world over!

I've had tours of both stations and all the Reedy Creek guys are great. They do have t-shirts for sale, but the only thing with Mickey on it is at the Firehouse shop on Main St. I have one of the Mickey shirts but it's just not the same as the real FD shirts. See you guys in a week or so. Maine :firefight
