Fingers turning black under your rings?

Does anyone know why this happens? I've had my engagement ring on for almost 20 years and my wedding band on for almost 18 years. They're real gold, not fake...so that can't be the problem. I've never had this problem over the years. It has just started over the last few months. Can someone explain why this would be happening now?

It happened years ago to me, turnd out to be a change in my diet. A reaction of the skin & gold to if I remember an Iron or Zinc deficiency.

Just have your Dr do a mineral/vitamin work up, you may need a supplement.

I would try what the PP suggested first, as that makes sense given the length of time you have worn the jewelry.

If that doesn't work try 'Jewelry Shield' or something similar. My aunt had this problem a number of years ago and someone told her that most jewelry has a non-toxic coating. I have no idea if this is true or not, it's just what she was told. She bought something like 'Jewelry Shield' and hasn't had any further problems.

God luck!

It's a chemical reaction between your skin and the metals in the jewelry. So yes, could be your diet. Happened to me several times in my life w/ jewelery I had always worn, then all of a sudden it was leaving black marks on my skin. All eventually went away.

This happens to me nearly every month during my "special time". I was told it is because of the different hormone levels and type of food I might eat then. I find it comes on when I eat more acidic foods like tomatoes.

Have you changed your lotion or sunblock? That happens to me, sometimes, when I wear sunblock.

You can paint the inside of the ring with a thin coat of clear fingernail polish.

happens to me sometimes with a thick gold ring I wear when I use certain lotions for my hands.

I had this happen to me too. I work in a jewelry store part time, so I didn't have far to go for an answer; too much acid in your body. In my case, I love Italian food so it was too much tomato sauce.
And as someone else pointed out, you can use clear nail polish on the inside of the shank (not on any stones or the back side of stones) and it won't hurt the ring.

The clear nail polish should solve the problem.

If your rings are 24 karat, they are 100% gold, but that is rarely done because the gold would be too soft. They use an alloy with the gold to make it harder, so if it isn't 24 karat, it isn't 100% gold and you could be having a reaction to the alloy.

Thanks for all your replies.

I guess I'll have to pay attention to what foods I'm eating. I'm not a tomato fan so I'll have to see what other acidic foods I'm eating.

Thanks again!!!

As Polyluvr said, too much Vitamin C can do it. Citrus fruits are pretty acidic, so if you are drinking/eating lots of citrus, that could cause the reaction.

Thanks MomofKatie ;)

It happened to me before~ years ago. And I am Italian and eat lots of tomatoes ; but @ that time I was also drinking a lot of OJ~ it was winter and I was trying to boost my immune system.

My MD said it was because of the Vitamin C~ too much acid n my diet.

And it was very embarrassing~ I had black residue on my neck ; under my rings etc.
After I backed off the OJ it went away~ phew !!!
