Finger scan

What is the purpose of the finger scan? Is that some type of identity thing? Do they know that is you going thru the turnstyles? Does anyone know??? Just curious...

From what I understand, it doesn't scan your actual fingerprints, but it somehow ties the approximate shape or size of your fingers to your ticket with your name on it. This is so people cannot use other people's used tickets, which is how Disney loses a lot of money.

DISers feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I have been looking into it too because they didnt have this the last time I was there, and this is what I gathered from what I read.

Tickets are non-transferrable. The scan helps prevent transferring.

The finger scan also means is not a good idea to purchase used tickets off ebay, although that has been said way before they started to use it. Plus you can add some of those offsite ticket vendors on 192 and International Drive that advertise used tickets for sale.

There have been days they have NOT used the scan and that makes me mad when they dont use it. I even asked and was told by the CM's at the gate that I could easily give my AP to someone after I passed through the gate and they could use it to enter. GRRRRRR!!!!! ºOº

If there is a difference between the finger scan that they have on file for the tickets and the finger scan that appears at the gate, they will ask you for a photo I.D.

My understanding is that with the first finger ID/card swipe, the combination identifies the ticket holder for future park entrances. In other words, any different combination of finger ID/card will trigger a red flag. It sure beats pulling out another form of manual card ID along with your ticket to enter...can you imagine the backlogs and line behaviours if that was still in play? and sad to say, there would always be people trying to get others in on their tickets if they weren't personalized in some way! I carry no ID or cash with me into the park (AK). Besides,,,most,and I say most gate CMs and EE CMs know me by name anyway. ºOº

I would suggest looking at Post #14 in the Everything About WDW Tickets locked sticky in this forum. It gives a pretty good semi-nontechnical explanation.

Basically it is intended to help keep honest people honest.

The system should have been designed better, with a "summary" or "summarily" mode where you still have to insert your finger but the turnstile unlocks in less than a second unless a finger scan mismatch was successfully computed more quickly.

This way it always at least looks like the finger scan is in operation.

The short modes are used when a lot of people are backed up at the turnstiles, where saving time is important.

In addition, line behavior would be less likely to degenerate if persons who need to show ID were escorted away from the turnstiles (easily done to the inside) and then interrogated.

If you have tickets that were used before they started with the finger scans they will still work, so once they insert them then those tickets will be tied to who ever used them. So it would not matter which ticket your daugthers use the next time they enter one of the parks.

1) They have two options.
. . . ask for a ID, if there is a name or signature on the ticket
. . . if no name on the ticket, they will ask for the original sales receipt
2) WDW is really cracking down on transferred or sold tickets.
3) If they can't verify the ticket, they confiscate the ticket.
4) With decreasing sales due to the economy, look for stricter enforcement.

This seems like a very bad idea. Even if you think all the CMs know who you are, what would happen if you were hurt or sick and were unable to tell people who you were or who to call. I would think that everyone going pretty much anywhere would at least have a basic ID (drivers license) on them.

I have no family so there is no need to call anyone (except 911 if need be), I don't drive in the park I drive in my car (hence thats why I keep my license in my car), and I never eat in the parks (too expensive) thats why I never carry any cash in the parks. ºOº
