...how do you find a reputable puppy breeder?

I'm afraid to just google. I want to do it right and not end up inadvertently buying a puppy mill dog.

We want a golden retriever puppy (we're not looking to buy right now, probably not for a year or so but want to start doing the research and getting an idea on price, etc)

So.. how do you find reputable puppy breeders? We'd also be willing to do a rescue doggie but we'd prefer a puppy... all things worth considering!

Any pointing in the right direction would be appreciated. :goodvibes

One good way is to locate a kennel club. Contact a member and ask for reputable breeders. This may help http://www.akc.org/breederinfo/breeder_search.cfm?action=search .

Also, attend a dog show. When the Golden folks are not busy, talk with them. They may have, or know someone that has puppies or an upcoming litter.

This past April I lost my golden girl:sad1: . She was wonderful.

Hope this helps!!!

I see you are open to rescues too. They have lots of puppies also! The puppies end up in the rescues becuase people suddenly realize that having a puppy requires time and energy. (I guess these people think puppies can house train and entertain themselves! ) Also talk to breeders about pups that may have some slight defect that makes them "undesirable". That is how we got our Aussie. She was on a website as free and amazingly NO ONE wanted her! There was a birthing accident that caused her to lose her foot. She is fine in every other way and most people do not even realize it is missing when they first see her! I also know of a Husky that was given away because he had a heart murmur. Breeders can not sell these pups from what I have been told. (At least that is what both breeders said.)
I am a supporter of adopting from rescues though verses purchasing puppies. I do overnights for rescue transports that come through our area so I see the faces of "cast offs" every other week or so. (I need to win the lottery so I can purchase a big piece of property and have funds to care to lots of babies!! )

Just some thoughts. If you are interested in rescues I can get the names of some reputable ones from my transport coordinator and send them to you. I am sure that no matter what your choice your pup will be loved!

I agree with the above poster who suggested that you contact a kennel club for the breed that you are interested in. They will definitely know of reputable breeders. We are looking at getting a new puppy soon and the people involved in our state's kennel club for the breed I am looking for have been involved in the breed and the kennel club for years and years.

I think you are wise to ask the question. A lot of puppy mills appear to be reputable breeders but they are far from it!

You can also talk to your local Humane Society. We got our golden as a puppy from the Humane Society. My dd really wanted a puppy (a larger dog, we weren't particular on breed)--we talked with them and they gave me a call when they got some puppies. You do have to be ready to get there right away because the puppies go quickly.

We did not consider a rescue because of all the problems that can occur in standard poodles, esp those who are bred in puppy mills. When we were looking for a puppy I started with the Poodle Club of America and ended up with the Milwaukee Poodle Club. I sent an email to the club president looking for members who had puppies or with puppies that were due soon. I ended up buying a puppy from a MPC member. Both parents had been checked for common genetic defects found in standard poodles including sebaceous adenitis which effects a large portion of the standard poodle population.

Yes! We found this out the hard way. We "adopted" a puppy from just this sort of place last year. They advertise as breeding their own, and stupid us fell for it. We ended up paying a very painful price. Please, be very, very careful. And good luck on your new Golden -- they truly are a wonderful breed!:lovestruc
