This is a followup post to let everyone know we did it!! We took our first trip to disney with Joseph on the vent. It turned out even better than could be expected!! We stayed at the Contemporary, so this was really convenient with the monorail. We spent two days at MK, one each at Epcot and MGM.
He had a blast! I've said it before and I'll say it again, Disney is truly a magical place. It just so brings out the best in him. I don't know if it's the stimulation, the excitement, the laughter, or what, but we see great things from him every trip.
He's on the vent full-time, but we were able to turn him down to one liter of oxygen the whole time we were there and even put him on oxygen only for short period of times. We saw him laugh and he talked, and talked, and talked, and talked....something he doesn't do at home. And even better he was carrying on conversations and using appropriate words and phrases at the right time. He sang and when we were going around the parks he would dance to the music. IT WAS GREAT!! I can't believe we ever hesitated. It was kinda sad though when he was asking for food he. He hasn't had anything by mouth for a while now usually he never says anything but one morning at two o'clock he was awake asking for french fries, hot dogs and bacon.
My husband decided he could carry him with oxygen on rides that the wheelchair couldn't go on. So he even got to go on Peter Pan. The easiest ride we found was Figment. The wheelchair fit great. Buzz Lightyear was where we met our only problem. We thought the chair fit, but when the cast member shut the door, it cracked our vent tubing. My husband fixed it at the first aid station, so thankfully no huge problem.
Overall, great trip experience!!! I heart
