Finally. Some pics from my new D40

Okay, so I received my D40 and have had a bunch of fun playing and learning. My subjects so far have mostly been my boys. I am new to the dSLR world, so please, be kind.

No post processing. Taken with 55-200 lens.

I think I took this with the 18-55. I used a flash to get his coloring right.

The following 2 pics were taken with the Sigma 30/1.4. I do believe they were wide open. I did a little post processing to adjust the levels.

I was having a bit of a harder time getting the colors right with the 30/1.4. I don't know if I need to adjust the white balance or what. I did not look at the histogram in the camera after I shot. Any advice or helpful hints are much appreciated. Also, any hints on getting the autofocus just right? In some of my shots, it seemed be focusing on the fence instead of the players.

You can set it to spot focus if you want to have more pin-point accuracy. My 40D is almost always set on the middle dot in the viewfinder. I like to focus on the nose or the eyes.

Sports action shots I sometimes set it to AI-Servo, press the shutter halfway down and follow the action until I press it all the way down for the shot. You'll get nice panning backgrounds while the subject is clear.

If you're taking shots w/ the 30 f/1.4, then you need to check your manual for the WB if the camera is not selecting the correct one. What lighting is in your house? If its lit up w/ incandescent light, then set WB to that. Or you can always fix it w/ photoshop Some of the blur is also due to shutter speed and your subject moving. A faster shutter speed w/o flash will help. But then, you might have to up the ISO a bit to get a correct exposure.

Sorry this is not correct, using AI servo will not give you a panning shot, only a slower shutter speed will give you a panning shot.

I stand corrected. I think I was thinking about capturing them moving while using AI-Servo.
