Finally saw Avatar - What is Disney thinking?

Let's realize also there is an environmentalist message to Avatar. That does fit with part of the education mission of AK.

I kind of doubt Universal was interested. They already had a home run with HP.

They were apparently very interested. Home run or not with HP they wanted a piece of Avatar too. Just like how both Disney and Universal are apparently going after Peter Jackson for the them park rights to the hobbit and lord of the rings. Disney went after Avatar because they lost out on HP.

I can't wait for the 'Hunger Games' interactive cue for kids. :lmao:

It's the classic Emperor has no close on story. If the right person at Disney likes and gets behind an Idea, the rest of the brown nosing, upper management puppets will get behind it as well, no matter how bad the idea really is.

Ugh...I had hoped, this Avatarland" would be a bad rumor. They've actually started construction?

yep camp Minnie Mickey is a thing of the past FOTLK is getting a new home as we speak and the big blue shovels are at work building a new land in AK set to debut in 2017! Yes the movie wasn't great but this expansion is also very well needed. James Cameron is a big technology guy and this project will definitely show that he is a hard guy to work with. It is confirmed there will be a banshee flying ride in the land. A new night time spectacular will be coming to AK as well as new night time Kilimanjaro safaris. This is well needed for AK especially the extended hours. Check the rumors and news boards for more details.

Two Dumbos in Toontown
One Rocket in Tomorrowland
Magic carpets in Adventureland
Flying Dinos in AK

And now banshees in Avatarland.

Woohoo.....

Hope I'm wrong.

this is not going to be a spinner ride. Right now rumors are saying it will be similar to soarin and that type of technology. I don't think James Cameron would be pleased with a spinner in his land.

I hope you are right, but rumors are rumors.

I just don't even think James Cameron would allow that I think he wants something much better in his land rumors are you will be simulating flying through the floating mountains of pandora

What happened to Disney's ceativity? Now they seem to buy anything that's popular instead of creating something new.

really they seem to buy anything thats popular? This is the first time they've done it. I also wouldn't say its necessarily popular. Avatar actually fits very well into AK. James Cameron is a top notch guy he's made the two most watched films of all time avatar and titanic. James Cameron also love technology and will make sure advanced technology is part of this new land. James and imagineering are not just going to slap this together. This project has the potential to be one of the best expansions disney has ever done. Yes the movie it self wasn't to great but that's not the point, the point is the theming. This project also extends the hours of AK making it a full day park like MK, they are also getting their own night time show and night time Kilimanjaro safaris.

no one is is forcing you to go to avatar land if you don't want to go to it. For example if you go to WDW and don't want to visit a water park Disney doesn't make you go to one.

Yes Avatar isn't a disney property, but remember there was a time when Indiana Jones and Star Wars weren't (personally I don't think Disney should have bought them, but thats for another thread) Disney properties either and people didn't think they fit in the parks either now everyone seems to want more Star Wars in the parks.

I haven't seen the movie. i didn't care to when it first came out(or now). i want to go to WDW for my 30th birthday in 2016. i think that is when the Avatar area is supposed to be complete? i am not very excited about. i was hoping to see AK before they did anything with Avatar, but sadly no. oh well. they did do a fantastic job with Carsland. i will withhold my complete judgement till it opens. just my 2 cents. :)

Go back even farther. Most classic Disney movies weren't original stories - Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Snow White, Mary Poppins (see Saving Mr. Banks). They were all adapted by Disney, not created by Disney.

I look forward to seeing what they do with Avatar even though I don't feel the movie is that good and definitely isn't a family-friendly film. That doesn't mean they won't do a great job building that section of the park.

First time they've bought something that's popular? Hmm.. Let's see what comes to mind .. oh, Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan .. should I go on?

but to make a land those were just rides and they made movies with those except Star Wars prior to rides. Obviously marvel can't come to WDW in ride form. I understand where your coming from but Disney owns all of those things the only thing in the parks prior to them being bought by Disney was Star Wars. Everything else was purchased before it was in the parks.
