Finally! My Post-Holiday Halloween FW Trip Report

Okay, you have to keep this coming as I am looking forward to living vicariously through you! My three boys are all teenagers now.....however we started camping (with a pop up) when the youngest was 1 year old.
So many great memories, so much money saved through the camping experience, and so many neat people we have met. When you stay in a hotel you tend to not talk to your neighbor, where when you camp everyone is a friend.

So true ... it is completely different than a hotel. My husband was commenting about how friendly everyone was - they'd say "Hi" when they walked by - and joking about how, being from NJ, we were like - What? What do you want from me? - we are sooooo not used to friendly people:lmao:

Hey! I resemble that remark! :lovestruc The hubbs tells everyone that he has to trim back my Mickey ears every morning because they keep popping out of my head. What's wrong with that? :confused3

I completely resemble it nowadays too :lovestruc

Thats hilarious - trim back your Mickey ears. Although not as hilarious as your backing the trailer up comment on the other thread. You are a hoot!:rotfl2:

I am loving the report! I love camping, grew up with camping, but, in a camper. My parents had that camper for 30 years. It had brown and burnt orange interior. I wish they still had the camper, I loved it!

I can't wait to read more!

I literally just finished my popcorn. popcorn::

Aw, Thanks ... it is so intimidating to write a TR so I am extremely excited that someone is reading !!!!

Hopefully I'll be able to start posting my pics tomorrow:goodvibes

I actually thought my plan was fabulous. We really didn’t have a budget for a big vacation last year. Yet we had FREE one day tickets! So it seemed pretty obvious that we had to go, somehow someway. So pretty early in the year I ventured over to where I figured I’d find the best ideas for planning an uber-cheap Disney-ish trip. The Budget Board.

Now before I continue let me just say that I do love the Budget Board. I’d been reading it for years and sometime back there was a lot of talk about really great budget Disney tips – I remember one lady with a bunch of kiddos who’d done a super duper cheap trip. I wish I could remember her name and look her up because she was amazing. Planned this wonderful trip for her family on very little $ – as I recall there weren’t many park days involved, but lots and lots of fun and memories. That was the sort of thing that I was looking for. Food being a big expense, I do recall asking for ideas about meals in your hotel room – and I mentioned that we’d be only doing the one day in the park.

I guess the tenor of my question was wrong or something. Because, frankly, I got slammed. Upon more research later I have realized that the tone of the budget board has changed a lot in recent years. Apparently taking my kids to the vicinity of Disney World and then only going to the park one day was borderline child abuse. Several people were pretty mean, as I remember it. Its funny how you can get your feelings hurt by virtual strangers, but I was crushed. The message I got was that if I didn’t have a million and a half dollars in my 401K and I couldn’t afford a “proper” Disney trip with all of the bells and whistles, then I should NOT go. People suggested that I donate my Give a Day tickets if I wasn’t going to upgrade them to multi-day passes. Don’t get me wrong, there were some nice and helpful responses too, and I even got some really kind PMs. But overall it was a rotten experience that made me feel really awful. I pretty much shied away from posting for awhile after that.

Before that time I had done a bit of reading on the Camping Boards. But it seemed to me that most people were in RVs. And as much as I would love one, we certainly weren’t getting one before our GADs expired ;) But for some reason I started wondering about tent camping at the Fort and took another look. This was during my great camping metamorphosis. I started thinking maybe camping at Disney would be the way to go, budget wise. You could save money, and the picknicking is all part of the fun, right? I found some wonderful trip reports from tent campers and lots of really nice people responding – joking, being funny about “dumb” questions, etc, etc. And the one thing that struck me was how nobody was judging the tent campers any differently than the people with the big gorgeous motorhomes. It seemed like people just loved camping and were willing to help out the newbies.

I finally got up my nerve to post – asking a few questions about tenting, a/c, etc. I got really great answers and people weren’t even shocked that we were only planning one park day. Several people said that they’d visited the Fort without even heading to the parks, there was so much to do there! It seemed so logical to me – cooking our own food, lots of activities. I’m sure anyone who reads this is aware that the Camping Board people make the Fort sound just wonderful. I got somewhat obsessed with going there. Suddenly the one day tickets weren’t even my key thing – I HAD to experience Fort Wilderness!

Over the next few months I read everything that I could about FW. I looked at tons of pictures, I studied the map. There was some part of me that thought that it just couldn’t be as great as people were saying, but another part of me knew that it was. Plus I was really excited to have the chance to be immersed in Disney 24/7.

At first we were shooting for August, but that didn’t work out. So we looked for a logical week in the fall. Now here in NJ they have this Teachers’ Convention every November and the kids get off of school for 2 days. Every other year since my kiddos had been in school they actually held a Teacher Inservice day that week, too – so it was only a two day school week. We came to the conclusion that that HAD to be the week we’d go. Of course after our plans were made we found out that they'd cancelled the inservice day this year so my kids would miss three days. But by then it was too late to change plans. ;) The only “problem” – it was Halloween. I wasn’t sure how my kids would feel about being away from home. We have always had parties and lots of relatives over and our neighborhood is perfect for Trick or Treating. But it was Disney and I figured they’d get over it. I could take them to a neighborhood in Orlando to Trick or Treat, right?

Silly, silly girl (again!) Can you believe that I didn’t even realize at first that Halloween at the Fort is like one of the coolest things, ever???? Once I found that out I was convinced. Of course I was late in making a reservation and had trouble getting one. But persistance paid off and I finally snagged a ressie (at a discount, even) for five nights. October 31-November 5.

We were going to the Fort for Halloween!!!

GREAT trip report!!! It is such an interesting read....I want more! :thumbsup2

I can't figure out how to quote multiple people, though ... so I am having trouble replying specifically - anyone know how to do that ????

Not sure if you've picked this up yet...but for each post you want to quote you click on the middle icon on the bottom right, next to the Quote icon. It will turn red/orange. After clicking on each one you want to quote, you click the Quote icon and it will take you to the advance reply page to type your responses in.

I actually called my husband over to the computer and said – You’ve got to see this, these people are nuts! They talk about Disney incessantly – they take pictures of food –

I don't know anyone that takes pictures of their food. :rolleyes1

I mean, really...what's with the food obsession?? :rotfl:

I ventured over to where I figured I’d find the best ideas for planning an uber-cheap Disney-ish trip. The Budget Board.

I'm so sorry...but am sure glad you found your way over here! :yay: Anytime I venture over there I end up getting mad at those tools. Mean spirited I tell ya!

Well, looking forward to the continuation of your great report!! popcorn::

Wow, AMDD (you are an acronym now, congratulations!), you have done great so far!

The pre-trip background information is great.

For what it's worth, I began my camping experiences as a Cub Scout, and continued on all the way to Eagle Scout. I remember the pit toilets. And worse. But, I wouldn't trade those experiences and memories for anything. So, encourage your boys to continue on in Scouting. It's a great thing for young men to be involved in.

I can't wait to hear about your actual trip to the Fort.

Carry on!

TCD

What a great trip report. Loved hearing about your camping "fears" and aren't you glad you overcame them? Can't wait for more.

Awesome!!! Just what I needed to keep avoiding that post-holiday reality check!!! Can't wait to read more!

After a rough week (or more) at work I am back for some more dreaming and reminiscing!!!!!!!!! AND I finally figured out how to upload all of my many pics to photobucket ...

Lovin' your TR. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for reading:wave2:

GREAT trip report!!! It is such an interesting read....I want more! :thumbsup2

Thank you ... I'll be getting to the FW part soon, I promise ;)

Wow, AMDD (you are an acronym now, congratulations!), you have done great so far!
Wow! TCD made me an acronym :worship: I feel like I am hitting the big time now !!!! Thats great that you were a Scout, TCD. My boys do plan to stay in scouting :)

What a great trip report. Loved hearing about your camping "fears" and aren't you glad you overcame them? Can't wait for more.

I am VERY glad that I got over them ........ I feel like it has opened up a whole new world of experiences for our family.

More, please!

Coming right up:wizard:

Awesome!!! Just what I needed to keep avoiding that post-holiday reality check!!! Can't wait to read more!

Ugh. I think that is what I have been experiencing, the post-holiday reality check. And it is keeping me from my trip report !!!! Isn't real life annoying, sometimes?

OK ...
back to your irregularly scheduled trip report ....

After all of the Disney Dreaming that I had done I was actually taken by surprise by how utterly unprepared I felt when we finally decided to go. Time was a wastin’ … I had no laminated cards or other discrazed tools ready. But since we were only doing one park day I figured we could wing it more than before. The family chose the Magic Kingdom for our park day and I am familiar enough with that park to know where to go/when to minimize wait times. I did a quick post on TGM to confirm my plan and that was that.

My parents wanted to come along to see the baby at WDW for the first time. I figured that they wouldn’t camp with us, but put them on our FW reservation anyway, just in case. Having learned our lesson about doing too much in a day and then setting up camp, we decided to stay in a hotel our first night there. That worked out perfectly since the only reservation I could get for FW started on Halloween.

As the trip took shape we actually added in more activities – my mom really wanted the kids to see Harry Potter Island after she had seen it on TV. My oldest son has read the books over and over again and the middle guy was just getting into HP. So we added a Universal day in to our plans. Also, our Busch Gardens annual passes include admission to Sea World so we thought we’d try to get there, too, since we had never been. Still, there wasn’t a whole lot I could do to plan those parks … so we’d just have to play it by ear.

The bigger issue for this trip was that we would be camping, and that took loads of preparation, especially for newbie campers like us. Plus the months of September and October were just crazy, as they are for many families, with two of the boys being in school and my teaching three day a week preschool. And as luck would have it I had the opportunity to apply for a new job the first week of October – and ended up getting an interview, a second interview, and yes the job :goodvibes This was a great opportunity to teach at our local elementary. But it meant that October was even more wacky than usual – between the stress of the interviews, spending my days off shadowing the teacher I would be replacing, briefing the teacher who would be replacing me, and of course getting all of the Halloween costumes ready for the boys, all of the planning and packing done – Whew!

By the time October 29th rolled around we needed a vacation. Bad.

Over the summer I had decided that my boys should have the fun of driving to Florida. I did it lots of times when I was younger, and its an experience that I didn’t want them to miss. The exit watching, the billboards, the anticipation … Call me crazy, but I do love a good road trip!:lovestruc Plus with all of the camping stuff it was practical. I was very excited about driving and I think that my enthusiasm rubbed off on my mom. A few weeks before the trip she decided that if we were driving she’d have to come with us. She didn’t want to miss the boys’ initiations as long distance road trippers  We decided that we’d drive down in her van. My dad would fly, rent a car, and meet us there. We even bought a really nifty item to carry some of our stuff – its called a Roof Bag and it’s a soft sided thingy that you strap to the top of the car. We would need the extra room with all of the stuff that was piling up in our packing pile. If you ever need more cargo space I would really recommend the Roof Bag – it holds a lot and it was a lifesaver for us.

So the night before the trip DH and I attached the thing to the roof and shoved it as full as we could with tents and tarps and blankets and coolers. We packed the car and hit the hay for our trip day the next day!

I was scheduled to leave work early that day, and had tried to feel the boys out about leaving school early, but they both really wanted to be at school for their Halloween parties/parades. So we set our goal at leaving at 3pm when the kids got out of school. DH was at home that day to take the puppy to the doggie care place and finish up some last minute stuff. As the day wore on, tried as we might, it became clear that we weren’t quite ready to go. So DH and I just decided to take some deep breaths and get on the road when we could. We got to go together to the kids’ school parade, which was fun.

DS11 was a spiderweb with a giant spider on his head.

SDC16618.jpg

DS8 was a knight.

SDC16616.jpg

Next came a variety of comical (in retrospect) mishaps which included (but were not limited to) my van running out of gas after the school parade causing DH and me to have to walk ½ mile in the rain pushing the baby in the stroller, Oh, and an incident where my dad decided that the kids were too smooshed in the back seat and yanked my mom’s big suitcase out of the car as he declared that it made much more sense for him to lug it to the airport and pay to check it as baggage. Personally I thought he was just upset that he wasn’t getting to drive 18 hours in a fully packed car with three kids , three adults, and a week’s worth of clothes, linens and non-perishable foods ;)

Finally, at about 6pm, we were on the road. The good part about leaving late was that there was no traffic. We were all so excited. I’ll say it again – I love a good road trip! We stopped at a BK for dinner, and the little guy had a great time running around the restaurant in his paper crown.

SDC16620.jpg

SDC16619.jpg

All I could think was that we were FINALLY on the way – and that if the baby was having that much fun at the BK he was going to go nuts at DISNEY !!!!

We had planned to try to make it to South Carolina and then stop for the night. But by the time we were getting through North Carolina DH and I just kept looking at the GPS , which said that we would reach Florida at 9:30 am, then looking at our sleeping (and super quiet :wizard:) boys and wondering aloud to each other if we should just drive through the night. We had talked about the possibility of going straight through before leaving, but worried that we’d be too tired and it wouldn’t be safe. We kept deciding to just keep going a bit more, and we took turns napping. Almost before we knew it the sun was rising and before too long we were having breakfast at a Waffle House in Georgia. This was big fun for all of us – it seemed so southern, although I am pretty sure that they even have Waffle Houses in NJ now.

Another hour or so and we saw the WELCOME to FLORIDA sign. Wooooo Hooooo!

We then pulled in to what has to be the most elaborate welcome center in the country! I have one word for the Florida Welcome Center – Wow! They have walls and walls of brochures of things to do in Florida, sorted by region.

They have comfy furniture for taking a load off.

And FREE orange juice J

I was excited to see this displayed:

SDC16634.jpg

The one strange thing that we noticed was that while the weather had been cool all the way down, even at breakfast in Georgia, as soon as we crossed the line to Florida it was HOT! Very strange. No worries though, we were packin’ an a/c for our tent ;) The baby was fascinated with the shrubbery.

SDC16622.jpg

And of course we had to do some "Florida" poses!

SDC16626.jpg

SDC16624.jpg

After some fun pictures and liquid sunshine we were back on the road and on the way to Orlando!

We finally pulled in to the Orlando area and we did hit quite a bit of traffic on I-4. But we crawled along and made it to Kissimmee by mid-afternoon. We went and checked my mom into her hotel where she could take a rest and wait for my dad’s flight to land.

DH, the boys and I headed over to the (outer edge of the) DTD area to check into our hotel. I had used Hotwire for the first time to snag the room for like $35 for the night. I have to admit I was a bit worried. We picked up a pizza and checked in. I can’t even remember the name of the place now – it is the one with the big pineapple in front. It turned out to be just fine for the night – our room was clean and comfy. We settled in to have a bite, change, and head out to downtown Disney for some pre-Halloween Trick or Treating.

Next up … Haunting Downtown Disney:ccat:

After getting the kids all costumed up we headed to Downtown Disney. When choosing costumes this year we had the forethought to go really simple, which was perfect for all of the wearing/traveling that the costumes had to do. So getting ready was a cinch. The plan was to meet my parents at DTD and have dinner. We knew it would be a mob scene, and I thought that we were getting there early. But a lot of people had gotten there before us, so we had to park quite far out and walk into the shopping area. I was worried about my parents, because I knew that they were not quite there yet and I wondered if there’d be any parks left by the time they made it.

We walked in near the Lego store, which the boys love. I told them that we’d be back again, and this night was mainly for Trick or Treat, but we couldn’t resist some Lego shots …

SDC16637.jpg

SDC16635.jpg

Baby Mickey was fascinated with those Lego doggies!

SDC16636.jpg

SDC16638.jpg

Then we scouted out what the Trick or Treating was all about. There were stations all around DTD, and you would get into a typical Disney wiggly line and then get to CMs with huge cauldrons of candy at the end of each line. As we were heading to the first line I realized something that I had forgotten ---- bags for the kids to put their candy in. I was panicking, wondering aloud if I could ask one of the stores for a bag or scheming to go buy something in order to use the bag when a CM must have heard me – and asked if DS8 wanted a bag. I was grateful and explained that there were two more boys coming along, but that was the last bag that this CM had. They were actually the MNSSHP bags, which I thought was cool :goodvibes
SDC16639.jpg

SDC16646.jpg

SDC16647.jpg

We sort of just had everyone share for awhile, then ended up finding a CM with one more bag (his last). Truthfully the baby didn’t care so it was all good. The lines were giving out a mix of candy, but the Ghiradelli line was giving out delicious chocolate squares filled with a pumpkin spice filling – and they we even handing them out to the adults! So DH and I enjoyed our little treat as we walked around and took in the Disneymosphere. Pure bliss, I tell you.

SDC16652.jpg

SDC16650.jpg

SDC16649.jpg

It was a very festive environment, there was music coming from the stage area and even a puppeteer telling a story. It was pretty cool! The baby had become a Mickey loving guy a bit before our trip, and we had so much fun watching him point every couple of minutes and say Ooh, Mow (translation: mouse). Very cute :cloud9: We wandered around, getting into the candy lines as we went. At that point the lines were moving really fast – just a few minutes and you would be up to the cauldron CMs. Sometimes they would give the kids a piece or two of candy, sometimes a whole handful. I have to say that I thought it was a very nice event – especially since Disney was doing it for FREE – we were impressed.

SDC16642.jpg

My DS8 decided that he had to spend some of the money he’d brought along to make a light saber – right this minute. He was having so much fun that we just went along with it, even though we’d be coming back another day.

SDC16653.jpg

SDC16655.jpg

SDC16657.jpg

The only problem was that while the stores were nearly empty, the “streets” of DTD were getting more and more mobbed by the minute. And my parents still hadn’t arrived. I was beginning to worry that we would never find them! Finally, after quite a lot of cell phone tag and lots of screaming into phones – You’re WHERE? Near a scarecrow? Under a picture of Mickey? We managed to bump into them. But by this time our Mickey Baby was in complete meltdown mode. We took of his costume and got him a yogurt smoothie, fearing he was going to fall asleep before having a proper dinner. Being a toddler, he managed to spill the sticky stuff all over himself and the stroller, so had to be changed and wiped up. By this time we were all exhausted and all hopes of eating at the Earl of Sandwich went out the window when we saw that the line was out the door. Oh well, there would be another day for that. We decided to call it a night , go offsite for dinner and back to our hotels for a much needed rest. On the way back to our car we stopped
in to the T-Rex gift shop and watched the dinos for a bit – Very Cool!

We went to a Golden Corral buffet on the way back to the hotel, which wasn’t bad but was quite expensive I thought. The baby slept through the whole thing, DS8 ate some plain pasta after we’d paid for him to get the buffet (apparently he was too tired to chew) and when we got the bill I was really glad that we’d be camping the next day, making food that we knew our kiddos would eat, and saving $ to boot ( a requirement of my super budget vacations!) By the time we got back to the hotel we were zonked!!! But it really wasn’t all that late yet, so DH and I were excited to be getting everyone into bed for a good nights rest before our Halloween FW check-in :wizard:

Next Up ... WM :sad2: and FW :lovestruc on Halloween Day !

Loving all the details! You are doing a great job writing about your trip and I know you will be so glad you did. I wish I had written more because I have forgotten so much!

Will be watching for the next installment. Can't wait to hear what all you did at the fort and what the boys thought of it! popcorn::

As much fun as I had been having already on the trip, I was really excited that Halloween morning. I just couldn’t wait to see Fort Wilderness! It was feeling like a whole new adventure to me :goodvibes I’ll admit, there was still a part of me that was worried about living in a tent for the good part of a week. We had never done that before.

One funny thing is that before we were leaving, when my mom was pricing out hotel rooms, she called me all excited one day. She said that she had found a great deal on a suite, and that they would go ahead and get the two bedroom suite so that we could stay with them that first night. I thought that was very generous of her, but I questioned why they would want to spend that extra money on a two-bedroom for the whole trip when the second bedroom would sit empty for the five nights we were camping. Well……………, she said. I was thinking that maybe at some point the boys would want to stay with us. Theres a TV in the room, you know. And anyway, what exactly are you going to do if it rains? It was then I realized that she still didn’t believe that I was going to sleep in the tent for 5 nights. And she was also worried about the boys getting bored (or wet !) I politely declined her offer (wondering inside if I was doing the right thing! Or was I crazy?).

So the first order of business that morning was breakfast, which was a complimentary perk at the pineapple hotel. It was quite nice, actually. They had your usual cold/continental type fare, but the kids got a kick out of going through the line and picking whatever they wanted. I had read reviews and complaints about the pineapple hotel online, and people really dissed the breakfast (I guess they serve the same stuff every morning), but I thought it was nice. We aren’t ones to complain, and sometimes I think that there are some people who will find something to complain about no matter where they go. One thing I will say is that this hotel was being billed as within walking distance to DTD. And while I guess, technically, you could have walked, it was quite far. And I am not even entirely sure that there would be sidewalks the whole way, so I really thought that that description was off target. But all in all I would definitely recommend the Pineapple Hotel for a budget motel – especially if is just an overnighter.

So after we ate and checked out it was time to head to Wal-Mart. The Wal-Mart close to FW was perfectly nice – but with three excited kids in tow and a long list of perishables and other staples it wasn’t exactly the high point of our trip. DH and I took some deep breaths and kept everyone as happy as possible but it was a pretty grueling little shopping trip.

Finally, an hour and a half later, we were in the parking lot filling our cooler with a layer of ice, then milk, hamburgers, hot dogs and the like, and then more ice. It was getting quite warm out and we wanted to be sure that everything would be cold and safe.

At long last we headed towards Disney property and I have to say I was just bursting with excitement! What would it be like? What loop would we get? We drove through the property and I just got that calm happy feeling I get at Disney. Everything is just so beautiful and well maintained.
SDC16664.jpg

We saw a monorail on the way and the Fort Wilderness signs, too!!!

SDC16665.jpg

I have to admit – I thought it was really cool that FW was right on the sign with MK! We pulled into FW at about 10:30, and there was no line at all.

SDC16670.jpg

We found the window for those who had checked in online and gave our name.

Now I knew that Halloween was going to be an extremely crowded weekend. And we were going to be happy no matter where we ended up. I had debated time again about whether to make a request. The thing is that our tent is HUGE – it is about 10’ x 20’, and I had purchased a small 9’ x 10’ screen room to put over our picnic table. So I was thinking that we might be more comfy in the 2000 loop. I also knew that 1500 was very popular, and would probably be full that weekend. But on the other hand, we wouldn’t have a golf cart, and I was worried about getting around. I thought maybe the 1500 loop would be better because it would be closer to the pool, campfire etc. I went on and on about this to my DH – on and on, back and forth, around and around. He patiently listened, but not being the obsesso-vacation/Disney person that I am he said that whatever I thought was fine with him. Finally, I decided to request the 1500 loop, with the understanding that if we got 2000 (which I figured we would) that we would consider that meant to be and enjoy our site no matter where it was :) DH agreed with me. We thought the 1500 location would be better, but we were open to whatever.

A couple of weeks ahead I called and asked for 1500, and the CM that I spoke to had just happened to stay there recently in the 1500 loop (weird, huh?) and told me how wonderful it was – how close to the Meadows area and all that and he said he’d be happy to put in the request. Then five days before we checked in we faxed in a request for 1500 – and also asked to be close to the comfort station and bus stop. Pretty demanding, huh?

So as we pulled up to check-in I was just taking it all in. I was so, so excited. The CM told us that our site wasn’t quite ready, and that we could park in overflow and they would call us. She gave us our KTTW cards and I think I missed it when she said 1506. But my DH, who up until that point didn’t really seem that biased either way, got all excited like we’d won the lottery and sort of started jumping around in his seat saying – 1500! Did you hear that? We got 1500! The look on his face … very cute ;) But I think that the CM thought we were nuts!

While we waited for our site we actually left FW and went on a wild goose chase of sorts. You see, we always carve jack ‘o lanterns at Halloween , but with all the craziness before the trip we had never gotten to it. DS8 wasn’t happy, in fact he was downright upset – so I came up with this great idea that we would get a pumpkin in Florida and carve our jack right there at our campsite – wouldn’t that be fun? He agreed that it would be , so that was our plan. But Wal-Mart was completely wiped out of pumpkins that morning, or I wasn’t sure they’d ever even carried them. We headed out of FW in search of a grocery store, where surely they’d have pumpkins – but no go. So we kept on trekking and I finally ended up at a Publix talking to the friendliest grocery manager ever - he actually called other Publix’s in the area and guess what? There wasn’t a pumpkin left in all of Kissimmee, folks. Now this was just strange to me because in southern NJ pumpkins are a huge deal – there are always tons of them available and everyone carves a few. They are even in the store after Halloween most times, I guess they just order more or something. But Florida was a different story. I ended up buying three tiny baby pumpkins in a package. Too small to carve, but told the boys they could draw faces on them. By this time they were just sick of driving from store to store so they were fine with it. Just about then we got the magical call that our “room” was ready so we headed back to the Fort to set up camp.

As we found our campsite I got even more excited. And honestly, I know its goofy, but I got really emotional, too. Just like that so happy I could cry feeling I get when I see the castle. Yes, I ‘m a sap. But it was so gorgeous. Our site was smallish, but so pretty! There were tall trees on one side, and an orange tree on the other.

SDC17163.jpg

I was really impressed with how pristine the site was, too. As soon as we got out out of the car the boys got to the business of exploring and being boys. There were lizards to catch, bushes to crawl under and sand to dig in. Every boy’s dream.

SDC16671.jpg

Of course DH and I were not getting a whole lot of setting up done, what with a one year old running around and trying to eat all sorts of natural wonders right off the ground. So I decided to enlist the help of the boys with getting our site Halloweened up. It wasn’t elaborate, but we were no Halloween scrooges! This is a pic from later that night, with my Mickey head Halloween lights all lit up.

I had called my parents and told them that we were settling in and to come have lunch with us. We had a fabulous lunch of sandwiches and salads, right there in the gorgeous sunshine. So relaxing. My mom could not believe how nice FW was – she was so funny. She kept saying – Well, if you are going to camp this is definitely the place to do it! She said she thought it looked like a movie. Of course my dad was poking fun at us because we didn’t get out tent up before decorating for Halloween.

After lunch my parents decided to take the two younger boys for a walk so that we could get set up. Unfortunately it was about then that the baby took a really nasty spill and conked his head on the edge of the driveway part of the campsite. It was pretty bad – if you were in the 1500 loop on Halloween afternoon I am sure that you heard my poor little guy screaming his head off. He got a ginormous goose egg on the back of his head and DH and I debated about whether to take him to emergency. It was that nasty. But after he had calmed down some and we got the swelling down with ice we decided to watch him for the next few hours and if he did anything strange take him in. My doctor once told me that kids rarely injure themselves badly if they are falling from their own height and speed (as opposed to off of something like a bike). He also told me that a goose egg was a good sign because it meant that the skin had absorbed the impact instead of the skull. After several re-enactments by DS11 we determined that the baby had tripped and fallen onto his butt before hitting his head, so we weren’t as worried as when we thought he’d gone straight down onto his head. The whole ordeal (which included my poor mom sitting in her car crying because she felt so bad that she’d been the one watching him when he fell) set us back at least an hour, but thankfully our little sweetheart turned out to be fine
