Final Avis receipt $100 more than confirmation

I reserved an Avis car rental directly through their website. I arrived at the rental counter and when the CS rep pulled up my reservation, he said “Oh, you’re a Preferred member, but your number isn’t on your reservation”. Then he added it and sent me out to my car in the garage.
Once I returned the car, I was emailed the receipt and noticed it was $100 more than my confirmed quote. I am assuming now that once he added my Preferred number to my reservation (which I didn’t ask him to do, and he didn’t ask me if I wanted him to, and he didn’t say it would increase my rate), it changed my rate 🤷🏼‍♀️
I have called Avis twice with no solution. (First rep said a supervisor would call me back and I waited a week, but no call. I called back and the second rep said to send screenshots of my receipt and confirmation, which I did, only to get a duplicate email receipt of my final charge, which is still $100 more). 😡
Can anyone point me in the direction of who I can contact to rectify this? Has this happened to others?

Did you return the car at the time you were supposed to? As soon as you go into a new 24 hour period its an entire additional day charge.

If that's not the case. Send the original reservation and the updated fee to your credit card company and dispute the charge.

I absolutely returned it on time (and the receipt shows that). The charges on my final receipt show a base rate of almost $100 more. I’m trying to get Avis to rectify it before going down the CC route, but trust me, that will be an option 👍🏼

Time is money, and companies are regularly not responding to customer service issues and making it near impossible for their customers to either get someone on the phone or get resolution through emails. I'm not wasting a bunch of time on the phone and going back and forth on issues that I was overcharged on.

A quick look at that website was all I could take. It's all advertisements and not easily searchable.

Is there any detail on the receipt they sent you to determine what is different? Normally, they itemize the daily rate, extra mileage, fees, etc. so you should be clearly able to see what is different. Did you return the car with a full tank of gas, they charge excessive 'fees' if you did not. Did you return the car to the location you originally indicated when making the reservation? Whenever I have returned a car with Avis at any airport, their person was there with a handheld device to check-in the car and print a receipt. I have Avis preferred and that relates more to being able to skip the counter and go directly to your car. Certainly being a 'preferred' member would not cause the rate to be higher.

The change on my final receipt is actually in the “base rate”. I believe that once they added my Preferred number, it knocked out my discount code that I already had in there and applied my regular Preferred discounted rate 🤷🏼‍♀️ And nope, I didn’t do any of the things you listed to cause in increase in my rate 🙃

The two CS reps weren’t able to tell me that that’s what happened and that it wasn’t my fault that the rep did it without asking or even telling me that the rate changed.

Disputing with the CC company should be a very last resort. Go to elliott.org and read their tips on things like this
You should try to resolve it with the merchant first. OP tried twice. Reasonable attempt not last resort is a good policy. Credit card dispute makes sense
.

Avis also overcharged me, not by much it was about $15ish dollars, and the front desk said it "might" be for tolls. I was pretty sure that I paid for all the tolls with change as we went through them, so I wanted that confirmed. The desk told me that I had to call another number. I never called back but it bugs me when reminded of it.

Avis claimed we didn't return our rental at all. We sent the receipt showing it was returned. No, it's not here. They were trying to charge us thousands, finally after dozens of emails, phone calls and follow up phone calls on paperwork they never sent after phone calls, the car magically reappeared.

I rented from Avis last week in Vegas. I returned car at 4:30 AM and no workers to be found. Finally an person with Avis shirt said leave keys in car and whenever the person gets there will check in car. I had no choice but to leave because it was day before thanksgiving and airport was packed. Anyways, I noticed I was never charged. I did a chat on Avis website and asked for receipt. They said my rental was still open and I needed to call Vegas location. Of course they never picked up phone. But someone with me chatting with first person a receipt was emailed. I called main number and they said everything looked good. My credit card has not been charged yet. At least I have the receipt showing charge. Also, they are following Covid and everything is paperless in Begas. No paper contract. I was not happy with renting there as I had no faith in what I would be charged. I spent so much time on the phone yesterday that at this point I will wait to see the charge.

This almost happened to me last week in Vegas. I returned car before hours and my rental was still “open” as of yesterday. I still don’t know but did receive a receipt yesterday but my credit card has not been charged. I learned my lesson and will take a video of me returning the car next time.

We took a trip to the Pacific Northwest in August, our car rental bill almost doubled when we returned it. We called corporate and also talked to an employee we knew. Car rental companies can basically do whatever they want. The fine print at the bottom just says you’re final bill may change and that it is just an estimate. They are squeezing the car shortage excuse as much as they can.

There have been reports that if you dispute a CC charge with a rental company they will put you on the DNR list. Also depending on which CC company it is, there is no guarantee you'll win.

I've been charged a fuel fee several times in MCO even though I filled up right before getting to the airport. I've had great success getting it reversed by sending a DM to Avis's twitter team. I would take a screenshot of the original rate and also a copy of your actual bill and send them a message. I've found their team usually responds the same day. They seem to be extremely competent the 3 times I've had to do this.

We used Avis less than a month ago. We purchase the fuel option and our bill was a bit higher due to the increased cost of gas. I did a double take and then realized what it was...
