I have been told that you should pack your cameras and film in your carry on - this x-ray will not harm them. The x-ray used on the checked luggage is much stronger!

Definitely, carry them on the plane. Do NOT pack them in checked luggage.

We took all of our film in carry-on bags. However, at the airport, the security people did advise that film at 800 speed or higher could be damaged by the Xray. The disposable cameras we purchased for our children were 800. I was unable to locate one of them (already exposed) and it inadvertantly went through the machine. Fortunately, the film was not damaged and the pictures processed fine. Whew!!;)

What about digital cameras??? I assume carry on also??

Xrays will not harm the digital media, but, I would carry them on just to avoid theft.

Any speed will be harmed with the checked xrays, for carry on, you are safe up to 1000 speed film, 800 speed is fine. If there is a feeling of being uncomfortable, ask them to hand check it.

800 speed film is perfectly fine, really, if it is going through the security machines for carry on. xrays are the danger, and trust me, if these folks are sitting for hours in front of these machines, unprotected ( or you are walking through unprotected) the xrays are sooooooo low there is no danger. If there was any danger we would all have to wear lead.

Do not pack the digital camera, video camera or other expensive electronic equipment in your checked luggage. It won't be damaged by xray, but it could be stolen and you would never get it back. Since I know my luggage is much more likely to be opened now I also put my jewerly in my carryon.

As for film, I just let mine go thur the screener. I routinely use 800 speed film and have never had an issue.

I read a post about film exposure & wanted to have all of my film hand checked, after all, pictures are a huge part of our trip & I would hate for them to be ruined. Security told me that as long as it wasn't 800 speed or higher I'd be fine. But I told him I was more comfortable with him checking it. So I had it in a ziploc bag & he hand checked each one (20 rolls) & rubbed some chemical that he assured me wouldn't damage the film on each roll. All was fine & I didnt have any problems. BTW... I don't even know what the speed MEANS!!!:D
