Tell me how the pumps work - I get confused - do I :-

Go in and pre-pay

or

Do I put the fuel line in the car and fill up and then go in and pay

or

Do I have to use my card in the machine at the fuel pump

Thanks

All 3 !! depending on where you fill up.

but most seem to be the go in and pay first variety. So in an unfamiliar hire car guess the amount you need, go and pay it and then start filling. The pump stops when you get to the amount you pre paid.

The other thing to be aware of is when you lift the nozzle up there will probably be a lever on the pump that you have to lift up to get the fuel to start flowing.

If you have prepaid too much you can go back in and ask for change.

We normally fill up on the 192 on our way into Disney. I normally go and pre pay before they will let you fuel - they did say I could have a refund if we couldn't get it all in :)

Well we pre paid at every one we stopped at.
It's much easier than trying to figure out how it works.:goodvibes :thumbsup2

I didn't know that! We always under-estimate how much we think the tank will take to make sure we can get it all in. Now I know it's not so critical to get it spot on :thumbsup2

Geoff most if not all make you pre-pay at night,I think that it's a security thing & to stop people doing a "runner" with a full tank! I can't remember having to pre-pay during the day & as someone else mentioned once you lift the nozzle out of it's cradle you have to lift the cradle up (switch) I stood for ages my first time wondering why it wouldn't work!:lmao:

We filled up in a few places in the daytime and always prepaid, I remember one time there was a British woman in front disputing it  Never really saw it as a problem myself, but then again some places i've been to round here make you prepay at night and occasionally in the day so I don't think it's all that unusual.

My fave place to fill up is RaceTrac on 192 near where Watermania used to be.
Its always about the cheapest.
There are plenty of pumps
Takes my Nationwide credit card with no hassle and no need to go inside.
They are simple to use.

Other places either I have had problems with card in pump wanting zip code or had to either pay cash or card inside so I use RaceTrac every time now.
Watch out for some Gas stations overcharging, make sure you know the price before filling up, there can be 50-60c/gal difference just by going 50 yards to the next one.

I have found that there are alot more pumps that take UK cards around the main tourist areas (I drive, 192 etc), so you don't have to worry about going in to pre-pay. Those further away from the main areas tend to be pre-pay. I have not found it a problem, just the usual panic when you first fill up trying to work out how much you need, but as noted before, if you paid too much, they will just credit back on your card.

We've only prepaid a few times over the years, usually using the card at the pump, quicker that way. Think we may have prepaid when we went to Costco, which btw, we've found to have the cheapest gas! But things change day to day, never mind year to year!!!! It's all cheap compared to here:headache:

This foxed me too the first time I came across one.....thought I was going crazy , especially when I asked the guy at one of the other pumps and he didn't have a clue either ;)

Had to press the 'help' button for the attendant who looked at me as though I was, indeed, a little crazy......:rotfl:

i like the station right on disney property - the one near the boardwalk resort...
it's usually less expensive then the stations nearby off property...

We pre-paid every time we filled up last year.

Felt a bit stupid first time though. I guessed that the PT cruiser was similar to my own Picasso (in terms of tank size) so asked the attendant for $60 of gas. I figured that £30 a tank wouldn't be far out. I was pleasantly surprised that I couldn't even get $40 into the tank which had been almost empty.

And the Americans were complaining about the high cost of fuel.....:)
