DD started running a temp last night and of course we leave for WDW on Wednesday. I took her to the dr today because I am paranoid and she does have a history of ear infections. Her ears looked perfect the temp is gone, but the dr did write us an rx just in case she gets an ear infection while we are gone. I really don't want to fill it if I don't need it. Would there be somewhere while at WDW I could get it filled if she ends up needing it??
TIA

call your insurance co. to see which pharmacies are ok to use in the lake buena vista area. we ended up having our dr. call in a prescrip. to the publix down the road from WDW when we needed a unplanned allergy medicine refill.

good idea to be prepared. has your son ever gotten the pain reliever drops? my son frequently gets ear infections and these have been a HUGE relief to him! not sure what the prescription is, exactly, but i always take these with us on trips, just in case!

have fun!

Can you get it filled now before you leave? Some doctors may do this since you are going out of town. You will be ready if it does turn into an infection. Who wants to leave WDW to get a perscription filled.

While we were at WDW in 2005, DH needed something from a pharmacy, so he went to first aid in the MK and asked them about a pharmacist nearby and they gave him the number of a nearby pharmacy who also delivers to your resort! If I can find the name and number I'll post it, if not, just ask the folks at first aid for it.

The problem with a delivery pharmacy and a paper scrip is that they need to have the scrip in hand before they can fill it. You would need to have your doc call in the scrip for this to work, unless they can accept a fax from you.

What I usually do is take the scrip to my local Walgreens and have them *file* it, not fill it. Then if I need it on a trip, I call the local Walgreens and have them call my home store to get the scrip "transferred". There is a Walgreen's in LBV, but AFAIK they don't deliver.

PS: a lot of liquid antibiotics are really dispensed in powder form (amoxicillin is one of these); the pharmacist adds water to make up the liquid. You might ask your ped. to write the scrip to allow it to be filled as powder, then the pharmacist can give you the mixing instructions so that you can add the proper ratio of bottled water if you need to use it. The powder does not need to be kept cold.

There's a Walgrens Pharmacy on route 535 near the DTD entrance and there's a CVS pharmacy furhter down. We've used the CVS before down there w/o a problem. We use CVS at home all the time and are in there central computer system. It was just like getting it at home.

Let's think.... Idea, you could put it in a freezer bag surrounded by those blue ice thingies, technical term... Not sure if you can carry it on the plane, maybe you could pack it?

DH is a pharmacist, I used to work in the Pharmacy as well. Here are your options:

1) Go to the pharmacy you always use and have the RX put on file. Don't get it filled yet. If you should need it while in FL, call ANY Pharmacy you want, ask them to call your pharmacy (take the phone number with you) and have the RX transferred to them and they will fill it. Go and pick it up when it's ready!

2) Have the medication filled, but not mixed. Take the RX with you in powder form and add water if you need to use it. Use your dosing cup or spoon to help measure the liquid. Ask the Pharmacist to help you get the correct measurements if you need to. Personally, this would be my choice. Then I wouldn't have to worry about leaving the hotel, finding a pharmacy and waiting on getting it filled. If you don't use it, you can take it home with you for later use up to the expiration date.

3) take the RX with you and search out a pharmacy when you are ready to get it filled.

I would NOT get it filled and mixed before you left! The medication will only be good for 10 days after it's been mixed and if she doesn't need it until day 9, your in a jam. Besides, you eliminate the hassle of keeping it cold and going through security.

I hope this helps!! ENJOY your trip!!!

That's probably what I would do.

I agree with that. Also check with the pharmacist to see whether or not it needs to stay cold once it is mixed. Some do, but some don't need to stay cold, just cool. Some don't need to stay cold at all, but are chilled to make them taste better. If that's the case, you can find another way to make it cool (like measure the dose in whatever it will be given in, put it in a plastic bag and then set the bag into a cup of cold water with ice).

I'm a Pharmacist and I have dispensed the powdered antibiotic and then in a plain bottle given the correct amount of water to be mixed with the powder. Even if the antibiotic does not need to be kept in the fridge, it starts to break down as soon as it's mixed. Some are only good for 10 days after being mixed - the entire course of the antibiotic therapy. So you can't mix it, then wait a few days before you start to take it.
If you don't want to pay for it if your not going to need it, just take the prescription slip with you. As long as you have transportation to get to a drug store, you should be fine. If it comes in a generic though, it's probably easier just to explain the situation to you local pharmacist and pay your generic copay.
I hope your DD is better and you have a magical trip.:wizard:

My daughter is prone to ear infections too. In fact, for the past four years she has gotten one either right before we leave or right after we arrive. Turner Pharmacy will fill prescriptions for you and deliver, but they dont take insurance. Walgreens in LBV did fill a prescription the doctor called in and did deliver it to our resort for 10 dollars. They also took our insurance. I also have filled prescriptions before we leave just as a precautionary measure. There are plenty of antiiotics that my Dd has used that didnt require refrigeration, ask your Ped. for one. The pain drops for her ears were wonderful to have. I wont travel w/o them again. Good luck! I know how awful it is to have a child who's ears always hurt them.
