My DD 6 has had this all weekend. I am wondering when the rash will go away and stop itching her. She is home from school today. She still had a 100.9 fever yesterday afternoon, but 98.5 this morning. If she still has no fever by tomorrow, do you think she can go to school, even though she still has the rash? What I have read is that the rash can last between 1 and 3 weeks!!

My DD had fifths last year.

The doctor told us once the rash appeared it was no longer contagious. And that the rash could last up to a month.

I think (as long as she is without fever) you should be fine sending her to school. However, you may need a note from the doctor with an explanation about the rash.

My DD's rash only lasted a week.

My daughter also had this last year. The rash did come and go for about a month. She was able to go to school after the fever went away. Although it seems it didn't matter anyway because half of the class ended up getting it. It is such a contagious illness. DD was one of the last to get it. Then DS also got it but it only lasted a couple of weeks for him. I had never heard of it before the kids in DD's class came down with it.

and also hand foot and mouth ....rash and fever.......poor kids......

DD had it a few years ago. Once the fever went down, she was back at daycare. She did run "hot" for a few months after having the outbreak. Every night she felt like she had a favor, then, in the morning she would be fine.

I posted a question about this a few weeks ago...if you search you will find all the posts from then too. They were very helpful. From what I understand, they are contagious BEFORE the rash appears (very sneaky disease). Adults can get much sicker from it, so hoping you don't get it!

This went around my DD class back in First Grade. She never had any symptons other then the rash and "slaped face" checks. The rash will get worse if when the child gets hot (either from exercise or the sun/other heat source). I didn't think my DD would ever get over it It must have came and gone for about a month.

If your chid is feeling well and does not have a fever then go ahead and send her to school. Once the child has the rash they are no longer contagioius.

I had Fifth's disease (Parvovirus B 19) last year, and it is what lead to all my chronic fatique and neurological damage. I think when the fever is gone, she is no longer contageous, but I still continue to get the rash back whenever I pick up a little virus of any kind. It is a very common disease for kids, but can be dangerous for adults.

luvwinnie,

Thanks for the link. I had red some info on a different site, but this was more informative.

I think DD will be back at school in the am! Thanks everyone!!

This went around my family last June. Better believe me you don't want it. My kids were fine with it. But then I got it. Very itchy rash. But the worst is the joint pain. It feels like you have arthritis and can last for 6 months off and on. My knees and elbows were the worst. Yep I can tell you lots about this silly little thing...I hate it!!!

My DD had it last year. Once the rash appeared she's not contagious. My DD only had a fever for 2 days. Then went back to school with a small rash. There was one kid who had 102 fever for a week, while his sister missed only 2 days days school with a small fever.

If your dd has been around any pregnant women just before breaking out you will want to tell them they've been exposed. Tell them to contact their doctor to get a blood test if they don't know if they've had it or not. I had to do this when I was pregnant since I worked in a child care center. The fetus can be harmed if the mother contracts it during the pregnancy.:(

Definately notify the school nurse. You may want to leave some benadryl in the clinic in case she starts itching at school!

Ick!

I had this 4 years ago. It was terrible. I have platelet problems but this really knocked them out of wack. I ended up flying to Seattle I was so worried.

I was affected for closer to 2 months with being achey and rashy... it was terrible as an adult.

Interestingly enough no one in my family, friends or coworkers had it or got it. I don't know where I picked it up and why I was the only one affected.

Do you have ITP? I had Fifth Disease in June and was still having arthritis in my shoulder in mid-October when I started bruising. I went to the doctor (because after he diagnosed the Fifth Disease he said let me know if you start to bruise) and found out my platelet count was 12,000. It's been a tough road since then, with about 2 1/2 weeks in the hospital and all kinds of treatments, none of which worked. Last Thursday I had 2,000 platelets and they removed my spleen! I'm hoping I'm on my way to recovery--I left the hospital with 100,000 platelets on Saturday.

My doctors think that people who have autoimmune issues have more problems with Fifth Disease than other people. They seemed to think the fact that I get pre-eclampsia when I am pregnant is somehow related to this whole mess. So not all adults who get exposed have to worry--but it's definitely worth getting checked out if you run a fever and get the rash and arthritis. At the time, the worst part about it was the maddening itching of my feet. That seems kind of inconsequential now.

The saddest thing is that my son really blames himself for me going through all this. He caught it from someone at the end of the school year and I caught it from him. It's obvious that he didn't have any control over it, but to a 16-year-old who's afraid his mom is going to die, it's a lot to deal with. I feel so bad for him!

I had this 4 or 5 years ago- the kids just had a slight fever and rash but I had the joint pain. EVERY joint in my body hurt- couldn't even chew!

We "battled" this for MONTHS last year. The rash would come and go, along with dizzyness, on and off for 3 or 4 months. We kept going back into the doctor's office only to be told...It is still the Fifth's. He did some blood work that also said she had a current, raging case of this virus. Nothing could be done, but boy, do I hate Fifth's Disease!

KarenC, I have an autoimmune disorder (not ITP) and was worried when my co-worker's son had this a few weeks ago. I was so worried SHE would get it and pass it on to me. So far, so good. So sorry you have ha d such a rough time.

I have a birth defect called Thrombosidapenia with Absent Radius Syndrome. The first part is low platelets. They run around 60,000 but can and will drop if I get ill. They dropped to under 2,000.
I flew to Seattle (Alaska is not equipped for Platelet problems) and the doctor was *such* a jerk!!! He was ragging on me for "whining" and I wasn't *dying* at 2,000. {I could have bled internally} I mean don't you KNOW people have AIDS and Cancer and their platelets are low ALL the time? He didn't comprehend we had no blood bank in Alaska (well SE Alaska) and while he was a hematologist, he didn't comprehend the situation AT all. I refused to leave {Seattle} (almost a month) until they came up to reasonable levels for me.
