My almost 8-yr old niece has been spiking fevers since Saturday afternoon. It will go down with Tylenol but comes back. It's been as high as 103. She has no other symptoms except a mild headache and has been eating & drinking normally. My brother brought her to the dr. this afternoon & he didn't seem overly concerned. He gave her a shot of antibiotics & a prescription. I'm very worried-isn't there some underlying cause of fever? I don't have kids & don't know much at all about this. Can anyone with kids reassure me? Thanks.

My 3 yo DS had the same thing last week. It is a virus. He kept it for 5 days before it finally went away. I took him to the dr. on day 2 and they checked his throat, he lungs, and did a urine specimen. Everything was fine. He had mostly a cold, but the fever was knew for him. He did the same thing with the tylenol and motrin. Fever would go down until it was time to give him medicine again. Then back up. She needs to drink lots of fluids and rest. Hope she feels better.

I have a child and I've worked in a pediatric office for over 10 years - it's probably just a virus and will be gone very soon. It's sometimes nervewracking when kids spike fevers that high, but as we often tell parents, "fever is our friend," as it is the body's way of fighting off infection. If she's eating and drinking normally, and looks and feels not too bad with Tylenol, there's probably no need to worry. Taking her to the doctor was a good idea, though, since the fever did get up to 103.
