Make sure you get the right product and apply it according to the label instructions.

1. Weight of fertilizer in the bag; you might use this to compare prices of similar products.

2. Percentage of major plant nutrients in the bag, in order, the numbers stand for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium.

3. Fertilizer type - usually an indication of the best use of the fertilizer.

4. Instructions for using the fertlizer, it's important to note the amounts to apply, timing and spreader settings when available.

5. Guaranteed analysis - a listing of all the nutrients in the bag available for use by the plants.

6. Nitrogen types - nitrogen ready for plant use and nitrogen gradually released to the plants.

7. Secondary and minor untrients; these are needed in smaller quantities by the plants are necessary for growth.

8. Sources of nutrients used in formulating fertlizer - nice to know if you like chemistry.

9. Precautions; though fertlizers look harmless, they can produce stains, cause eye irritation and affect breathing. Take all precautions seriously.
