what do you think? i played untill i hit high school because the teachers really hated having females on drums and they gave them all the bad parts and such.. a lot of people told me the high school director was worse about it so i dropped out
are drums only for males?:o the boy that played cloronet dropped too because he was also given a hard time..
are flutes and claronets just for girls?

NO way!!! If you love the drums, keep it up! Lenny Kravitz has had a female drummer FOREVER!!!

My DD is a high school percussionist! She loves it and I love listening to her. Her band director Shouts "Chick drummers Rock!" every time she plays. She is still learning, and she does a wide range of percussion, but keep up on the skins, because Chick drummers do rock!!:teeth:

i guess my theory when i quit was "if he doesnt want me, its not worth it..." if i'm going to get bad parts and not learn, why bother.. our band is really bad anyway.. but its almost completely separated.. girls play flute, oboe, picalo, claronet, and sax.. boys play drums, trumpet, trombone, and tuba.. i think a lot of people got discouraged by theese band teachers

Female drummers are cool! I am so sorry you are feeling discouraged by a teacher . If you truly love playing drums, get back in there and show that male band director what someone with passion for their instrument can do ::yes::.

My sister and I were both percussionist. I played quintoms in marching band. Our drumline actually had more females than males. So, I'd have to say, drums aren't just for boys!!! ;)

Our band kids are definitely not segragated. We have female percusssion and male flute and clarinet. My DD started out playing clarinet but wanted in the jazz band(ours didn't have clarinet parts) so she started playing trumpet and does quite well with it. The director didn't think it was a good idea but in the last two years has encouraged some of the kids to switch from woodwinds to brass for different bands. Don't let anyone tell you you can't do it when you know you can!!

LOTS of female drummers and girls in the pit in Drum Corp!

(Except for the all MALE corps like the Cavs and Madison Scouts)

Karen Carpenter was a female drummer. And a darn good one. Our high school's marching band has an equal mix of girls and boys in the percussion section. My DS James (who plays the tenor drums or quints as he calls them) is dating the girl who plays the other set of quints. Don't let anyone tell you that drums are for guys.

Our HS snare line was all girls (5) last year. We have several boys that play clarinet-some of them are really good! We also have two girls (out of 12) in our HS tuba section.

ON the same line, my son plays an oboe. He is the only boy who does oboe.

White Stripes has a female drummer. Meg White is her name, I think? And what about the Go Go's. They had a female drummer, although I can't remember what her name was. I'm sorry that you weren't supported by your teachers. That's unfortunate. But, don't give up on it if you really do like it.

I'm a drummer! I think you may just have a jerk instructor. I was in band throughout school and never felt like I was below the boys. My dad was a professional drummer and my brother is a drummer as well. We're a drumming kind of family. ;)

I always wanted to play drums, but that was the one instrument my parents refused to let me have in the house.

My DD8 is taking Drum this year, and is very excited about it! I think it is wonderful that she decided she wanted to do this, and followed through.

DON'T quit!!!! Check out this website: www.drummergirl.com, and read the interview with Craigie Zildjian (CEO Avedis-Zildjian) for inspiration. Your band director is a jerk! Rock on, girl!!

It took us a few weeks to find someone willing to teach our dd10 how to play drums. She'll be in middle school next year and will be ready to start in band. In the meantime, I can always tell which 80's song she is listening to by the way she plays the drums in her room when she is wearing her headphones. Her fave song to play to is "Centerfold" by J. Geiles? Band. She also does a cool " I Love Rock 'n Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

My DD10yo just started percussion in middle school last week, she is so excited!
