Fellow teachers, I need your help!

I have spent my whole summer filling out teaching applications and my brain is fizzling fast. How would you answer this question.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES SHOULD BE TODAY?

I can tell you my main objective:

To instill a lifetime love of learning in each child by meeting each child's individual needs

Well, if that's EXACTLY the way the question was worded, I would say that the main objective should be that children be taught proper grammar so such subject/verb agreement problems can be avoided.

I don't know how I would answer that question. The final product of our education system should be a multi-faceted individual who is respectful and courteous, who can communicate effectively, and who has the tools to solve real life problems. That should be more of a focus than benchmark testing.

That's my opinion. I am not a teacher. My degree is in civil engineering. However, after staying home full-time with my children for ten years, I have returned to the work force as a fourth grade teaching assistant.

Well, do they mean "What do you think the main objectives of education in the U.S. SHOULD be today? or "ARE today". Makes a big difference. IMO, if the above is the actual wording, I wouldn't apply to that district.

It's true that those are totally different. I think that education should focus on kids as individuals, but the state seems to think the objective is to get each child to know the exact same things at the exact same time. It's such a shame that many teachers aren't allowed to teach in a way that does not meet the state's objectives. I am lucky to teach at a Montessori magnet school, where I have a certain degree on leeway in how I teach.

For SHOULD be i would sake to "prepare students to compete in a global economy", but that comes from a high school perspective. I would think the answer may be different for elem.
