Fellow readers, lets chat!

I read everything! - mysteries, YA, humor, textbooks...

My favorite fiction series is Harry Potter (J. K. Rowling) and my best non-fiction recommendations are:

The Paradox of Choice - Barry Schwartz
The Power of When - Michael Breus, and
Atomic Habits - James Clear

Lots of different genres appeal to me.
Some favorite authors:

Jim Butcher (love love love the Dresden Files)

Nora Roberts; Julia Quinn; Johanna Lindsey; Susan Tizdale; Beatrice Small; Courtney Milan; Maya Banks (her historical lines)

Laurell K Hamilton (before she went off into her own little worlds; I stopped reading her about 6 years ago... I prefer her older writings of Meredith Gentry and Anita Blake)

Kathy Reichs; Don Winslow; David Morrell; TJ Newman

Terry Goodkind; Raymond E Feist; Joel Rosenberg (Guardians of the Flame); Robert Asprin; Terry Brooks

Blake Crouch; Jack Kilborn; J A Konrath; Cody McFadyen (these guys are dark)

True life crime, depending on the author and subject. Ann Rule, Charles Bosworth, and Don W Weber are good authors in this genre.

DH loves Brandon Sanderson, but I couldn't get into his writing style. Also Will Wight and Marko Kloos

Adding some more authors (it was late when I answered):

Lilian Jackson Braun, Rita Mae Brown

Orson Scott Card, Harry Turtledove

Jodi Picoult

Only genres I don't really read are romance and sci-fi. And I guess Fantasy.

I read about 60-70 books a year easily.

I prefer mysteries that feature a female lead. Bonus points if it takes place in the outdoors.
  • Favorite Author: Nevada Barr
  • Favorite Series: Anna Pigeon series
  • Honorable Mention: Pam Beason, Sam Westin Mystery Series

FYI- There's an annual reading thread that has lots of great suggestions that other Dis members are reading.

Have you read any of the Agatha Raisin series? I haven't read them all, but recently had one from the library that involved the outdoors. It was called The Walkers of Dembley (if I'm spelling that correctly).

Another author I've been reading is Peter May. Working on the the Enzo Macleod series. Also just finished the Inventing Anna book by Rachel Williams.

Currently I have 3 books on the go - a Sheila Flanigan in print, Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty in print and All her Little Secrets by Wanda Morris on my e-reader.
I only use my e-reader at bedtime.

I'm currently reading The Peacock Throne Wars. It was written by a friend of mine, Rajiv Kapoor. It's available on Amazon.

A man moves back to Delhi to head up a cyber security group and finds an ancient Mughal tomb that is hidden in somewhat plain site. I don't know where this is going to take me yet, I'm about 20% of the way through it. It's historical fiction. That's my favorite genre, except for autobiographies. Sammy Hagar's Red is my favorite of the ones that I've read.

I read pretty much any genre. Here are books I have enjoyed recently:

Colleen Hoover's Verity
Stephen King's Fairy Tale
Matt Haig's The Humans (all of his books, really)
Blake Crouch's Dark Matter, Recursion, and Upgrade
All of Ruth Ware's Books

What genre books are Ruth Ware's?
Never mind I googled her and I'm sure I've read some of hers. Good stuff - right up my alley.

I'm really bad for not remembering authors.

I liked Turn of the Key and The Death of Mrs. Westaway the best. It's mostly psychological thrillers. I like books like "Girl on the Train" as well, and there are a number of authors who write with similar themes.

Several others that I forgot to mention are: 7 and a Half Lives of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton, and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab.

Tom Clancy (the original Jack Ryan series... ignore the movies). Espionage, action, politics
Lee Childs (the Jack Reacher series) Action, mystery(?), loner
David Poyer (Dan Lenson series... the early ones are the best IMO) Navy
John Grisham courtroom
JK Rowling (Harry Potter) fantasy

Historical fiction - especially with a strong woman as a central character. Marie Benedict a current favorite but there are several books out about women's roles in WWI and WWIi.

Steve Barry does history with a twist. Very interesting to listen to on long drives.

Lee Childs, John Grisham, David Baldacci, James Patterson

Anything by James A Michener

I treasure each James Michener book I am privileged to own even if they are mostly paperback! I read and reread many of these wonderful works of art when my health started to fail as each book is a gem. My eyesight is not great after numerous eye surgeries so I am unable to read the tiny print but remember the detailed stories. I found this list online, but I believe there are many more... My favorites (*my old friends*) bolded. I encourage you to pick up any JM book and savor each page!

I'll read pretty much everything. Right now I'm reading the John Sanford Prey series, along with the Virgil Flowers spin-offs.

For those that like Fantasy - I recommend the Elizabeth Moon Paksenarrion series. Also, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time.

For romantic/mystery I like Nora Roberts/JD Robb, Linda Howard, Karen Rose, Elizabeth Lowell, Suzanne Brockman, and Mary Burton.

For action Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, Barry Eisler, Steve Berry, and David Baldacci.

I read for fun, for an escape mostly, so generally read light hearted easy reads. I also like to read book series. Current series I read are the In Death series by JD Robb, Womans Murder Club by James Patterson, Hannah Swensen Series by Joanna Fluke. I also like Dean Koontz and Stephen King and other best sellers.
