My DH and I have been thinking (wanting) to move to Florida close to our happy place for several years but haven't taken the plunge. The company that my DH has been working for the past twenty years is moving to Mexico. So now we're thinking if we're going to make the move, now might be the time to do it. We're hesitant about ruining our happy place. We're afraid it won't be as special to us getting to go more often and living in our happy place. We're wondering where our new happy place will be. What was/is your experience ?

My husband and I have been talking about doing the same thing...I'm curious about what others think too!

I have lived near Orlando for about 25 years, and in Florida for much longer. When you live here, you have your daily life just like you would anywhere else. If you don't work or live right in the tourist corridor, you might not even think about it very often. Yes, we do have the ability to go to the theme parks as often as we would like, which is a nice perk. But for me, I really prefer the full vacation experience, so I tend to spend vacation time at WDW and not do many day trips at all. It does save some money when you don't have to pay for airline tickets or the costs of a road trip to get to one of the most popular vacation destinations on the planet! I don't think living here takes away from the "magic" at all. In fact, since you do have the option of visiting any time, the time you do spend in the parks is much more relaxed. You can take the time to try all the shows and other smaller attractions that you may have been passing by in your quest to hit all the headliners.

But do your research. Living in Florida isn't for everyone, and living in Orlando isn't for everyone. You might decide you would rather be a short distance away instead of right next door.

My husband and I have talked about this retirement (a long ways off but it's nice to dream). However, we live in the deep North (nearly Canada) and I don't think I could deal with the Florida critters! We are considering doing the snow bird thing though (leaving the north for the winter).

We're thinking of living about 30 minutes away. Not too close but close enough that we can go for dinner and fireworks or hit a few rides.
About those critters.....my dad lives in Merritt Island. The noseums eat me alive but they don't at disney. Is it just certain places in Florida they hang out? He does have a pond in the back yard and lives across the street from the Banana River. But, disney has a lot of still water as well.
