I dont know why but since we moved here 4 months ago I have been feeling really restless.

I love working from home ( kept the travel agency going after we moved) but I think I just want something new. I dont have much here to keep me busy and Im not used to that!

So what do you do when youre feeling restless? Have you ever felt like you need to do something completely different than what youre doing now?

Boy you hit the nail on the head for me big time! I am incredibly restless and at a huge crossroads with career and life and wanting to do something else. took a layoff package from pharma sales at end of 2009 because I hated it and had been at it since 2001, have experience as an RN and NP but haven't practiced since 2001 and really don't want to go back to that, took another pharma job doing EXACTLY the same thing as what I left last month, but yesterday I quit because I just couldn't stomach it for another day!! So now I am without unemployment and will have to start digging into severence, so we put the house on the market and are planning on moving to Tampa area to jumpstart new life (kids totally on board with move)...but I need to find something to do and I really want to work from home and I have no idea how to do it. Wow....probably wish I didn't post, ay??

LOL Mal. No I am glad you posted :) Maybe we can figure something out together?

I just feel like I need something new! Is this a midlife crisis? I am not sure I want to continue being a travel agent, or at least not sure I want to continue owning and agency, I feel like I should have more contentment in my life at this point KWIM? Not trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!

Well I'll be 42 next month and I definitely don't want to be doing what I've been doing since Ive been a "grown up"! What's funny is that I always thought I wanted to be a travel agent! Goodness knows I've helped enough people plan their trips to Disney:lmao: I just don't want to keep feeling so unhappy with what I do for a living that's for sure....my daughter keeps saying do what you love...well how do you get paid for that?

moreover how do you decide what you love? and then you have to decide if "doing what you love" will kill your love for it.
Im turning 39 this year, same thing. I dont know that I want to do the same thing that I have always done. What is it they say? "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result" ?
I do love being a travel agent. It can be really stressful sometimes though. I love to travel, I have always been in the industry in some way or another (worked for Holland America for a couple of years, worked in a local tourism place as a first job) I have always loved it. Honestly right now its tough to make a living at it though. At least as an owner AND add to that moving a few months ago and trying to get established here, its been really tough.

I just want to do something. Something important, does that make sense? I feel like Im right on the edge of something but I cant see what it is.

UGH is that too deep for a Tuesday?

Have either of you tried doing volunteer work? When I feel like you feel as described, doing something for someone else usually helps me.

Mal, why not be a travel agent? There are travel agents with agencies and then there are travel agents that work for companies and plan business trips. These jobs tend to have all of the company perks but the fun bits of doing travel. Or, why not become an agent AT Disney?

Regardless, I agree that you have to do something you love, at least for me. Or at least like. I can't see myself working day in and day out at a job I hated, if I could help it.

I used to volunteer all the time before we moved here. Its something I need to get back into, I just need to find the right fit I guess.

Mal, if you want to pursue being a TA I can help you get started (wow that sounded totally MLM didnt it??) I mean I can point you to good schools online and that sort of thing. If you want to do it from home there are a lot of agencies that will hire someone to go that way. You can finish up training and school in a few months.

Check out www.thetravelinstitute.com Theyre are really the best in the business IMHO

Maybe its because you had so much going on before the move, with trying to sell the house and all, and DH being already in new location.

Perhaps you are confusing calm & order with being restless?

Go outside. Take walks or hikes. Drive around. Explore your new area. Visit new stores. Learn the history of the area.

I was 42 when I woke up & realized my job was not my life and I needed to start enjoying my life more. It sure did take a while to figure out what that was though.

I went from secretarial work to waitressing several years ago.

The waitressing job lasted 12 years, but I'm glad to be done with it. I was getting very burned out dealing with a few nasty customers here and there.

I'm "retired" now. I had planned on looking for something else part-time, but really just enjoy being at home. DH said as long as the bill get paid he doesn't care if I don't work outside the home.

I find plenty to do here to keep me busy, although I have started to think along the lines of doing some sort of volunteer work just to "give back" a little to society. Maybe at the hospital or one of the local nursing homes, or the senior center, etc.

binny -thanks for the info on the schooling for being a TA. My biggest issue is probably everyone's - I have 3 kids to support. I made pretty decent money in sales, and i could make good money going back into nursing and eventually back into practice as an NP....its just not what I want to do. Spent 9 years in an ER, then 9 years in sales...lots of other jobs before that. Been working since I was 14. It sounds selfish to not want to go out and make the money I could doing those jobs. Boy where's that powerball ticket when you need it??
