Feeling pressure due to looming price increases

Like others have said, don't worry about the cost of the initial point buy in. In the long term it's a rounding error in the cost of using DVC. With annual dues, tickets, and all the other costs involved with visiting WDW, it really won't matter if you paid 10 bucks more a point at the very beginning.

One thing I might add is, purchasing resale doesn't necessarily mean you'll be shutout at Riviera. Sure, you won't be able to book there, but you can always rent your points out to someone else, and use that money to rent Riviera points from someone else. Of course, you don't want to be doing that every year though if you love RIV that much. You're probably better served by renting once and resort hopping before buying if you're not sold on buying, yet. If you were going to jump right in and buy anyway, I'd buy resale. Definitely don't want to jump in and buy direct, find out it's not what you wanted, and put it on the resale market. At least you know if you buy resale, you're most likely going to recoup most, if not all, your money, if DVC isn't for you.
