Feedback on Fort Wilderness Cabin

We’re considering a first time stay in the cabins this summer. Our usual go-to resorts are POFQ, Wilderness Lodge or Beach Club. But, we’re liking the idea of the cabins this year, especially since I found out there are some dog-friendly cabins (we’re contemplating bringing our Golden Retriever). A little more info...there are three of us and we will have our car. We prefer to drive to the parks, and much prefer the boat transportation from the WL to the MK to the buses. I hope the boat transport is still operational this summer, as that is another thing attracting us to FW.

Anyway, can anyone who has stayed there recently or in the recent past give me your feedback? Pros and cons. We don’t consider long walks a con, FYI.

Thank you for your help!
Nina

All pros 0 cons for our family. We love having a full kitchen for breakfast and a dinner or two at the cabins. We really enjoy the takeout from p&j’s at the fort. Our favorite bar on Disney property is crockets tavern so don’t miss out on it. Great drinks and good snacks/apps to be had. MK is the only park we don’t drive to since it’s much more convenient by boat vs parking at ttc. I highly suggest you get a golf cart to explore the campground.

Love it. The extra room, we often have a resort day, rent a golf cart or bring our bikes. You may be shocked to learn many stay here and never go in the park. You can easily drive to The parks, the boat to mk is great. We often order one of the family meals and bring it back to eat in the cabin. There are internal buses to use and some consider this a con. You might want to post on the campground forum for more info.

We stayed there for the first time over Thanksgiving Our main reason for staying there was social distancing.

Advantages
extra room
so easy with a car - park literally steps from your room
kitchen was great
deck for sitting outside - way bigger than any balcony we’ve had
our cabin was very close to a pool

Disadvantages
cabins aren’t walkable to anything but the pool.
not much/any car parking by store takeout restaurant
dependent on bus to get around campground or rent a golf cart
microwave/oven combo in kitchen. Oven doesn’t work great.

Overall we really enjoyed the experience. It was perfect for social distancing and taught us about a place we might not have tried otherwise.

A Con is that they are not fully open, no shows and limited dining options. On the Pro side, it's a one bedroom cabin with a kitchen and outdoor grill. You also have your have your own parking space.

Thank you, everyone! I really appreciate your feedback. We’re excited to try out the cabins!

We will be staying here for the first time this coming Thanksgiving! We are a part of 5 this time, 3 real adults and 2 Disney adults and the cabin was similar in cost to getting two rooms at Pop. I am loving all the feedback so far!

Pros - cabins are quiet at night, beautifully decorated, have a kitchen, and you can park right at your cabin. You can bring a dog too. The boat runs to MK and usually doesn't have a long line.

Cons - even with a car, you are on the northeast corner of property, so getting down to parks other than MK can take a while. And it's one place on property where mosquitos can be bad.

Tip - If you can, bring bikes so you can get around the resort without renting a golf cart. You cannot park your car at the boat dock, but you can park your golf cart or bike.

What about feedback with bringing dogs?
Fleas/ticks an issue?

Fleas/ticks an issue?

We've been and brought our dog several times (when staying in a campsite)... she is on regular flea/tick/heartworm prevention, so we didn't have any issue and didn't see any buggies on her while we were onsite... the only problem was keeping her (a yellow lab) OUT of the canal that ran behind our campsite! It was all fun & games until we saw a (small) alligator swimming by while sitting outside enjoying our morning coffee!! No more swimming for the pup!

I've also stayed in the cabins and love them!
Pros
Space!
Queen Size pull-out in LR is pretty comfy for a pull-out.
Full Kitchen with stove, full-size fridge & freezer, good counter space, coffee maker, toaster, plates, pots & pans, utensils
Tip: if you're going to be grilling on the awesome charcoal grill outside your cabin, you might consider bringing a good chef's knife or sharpening stone- the ones provided were dull
The windows open! This may seem odd, but when you have beautiful (not too hot) weather - it's nice to get some fresh air inside!
It's a FUN atmosphere - in addition to the Disney "bubble" people do go all out and decorate their decks, golf carts, sites, etc... do a google search for inspiration!
So many activities: Trails, Horseback riding, Visiting the Stable and seeing the horses (park/parade horses live there), Tennis, Tetherball, Basketball, Shuffleboard, Playgrounds, Archery lessons, Canoe rental, Bike Rental, Golf Cart Rental, Campfire singalong with Smores! (when running), Small beach to view the Electric Water Parade, Movies Under the Stars, Boat Rentals & Charters, Main pool with slide, snack bar, lots of quiet pools... I could go on and on!
The restaurants are all great - although they are not all open at this point - still, plenty of variety (and the Fried Chicken/BBQ Rib platter is great and shareable!)

Cons
The bathroom is a bit small with only 1 sink - gets crowded with more than 2 people
The closet in the bathroom is also a bit small - again, fine if you're just using it for 1-2 people
I wish there were chairs outside in addition to the (big) picnic table - but we drug out a couple from the "dining room" table to use
You really do need an alternate source of transportation to get around the resort (bike or golf cart) unless you use the internal bus system, which is adequate.

We stayed in a cabin three times when our kids were younger. Loved it. We did the boat to MK and drove to the other parks. The extra space is great and it really is a relaxing atmosphere. The kids enjoyed the games at the pool area and the campfire (I don't know if any of that is happening now).

I just wanted to add that we have never rented a golf cart and have never felt like we needed to. We could walk or take the internal buses anywhere we needed to go. I read a lot on these forums that people think a golf cart is a necessity, but we have never felt like we needed it.

I mean, it’s FL “forest”. I’m sure Disney does their best in regards to pest control, but probably safest to make sure they are on medication. We loved staying there with our dogs!

Our pups are on medication but it's awesome to see there have been no issues. The gator.. well Yikes! Ours love the water too, are there other options for them to enjoy it? They love getting soaked with sprinkler heads!

I’d love to book here. My girls would go nuts. But I am NOT a nature lover. I am NOT a camping gal. Can a non-camp lover, still have a pleasant experience here? LOL

The Cabins are nice and have a kitchen, living room, and bedroom. I don’t like camping either and the cabin didn’t feel like camping. I also loved that you could park your car right next to the cabin and we rented a golf cart to get around which was fun and convenient. We normally stay at deluxes but stayed in the cabins so se could bring our dogs this time. It was definitely a different experience, but no less enjoyable!

Great details; thank you -
How much is the golf cart rental? We usually stay at Old Key West but I’d love to mix it up for my girls. They’d get a kick out of it for sure.

Golf carts are not necessary but sure are a great convenience. At about $70 a day we tell ourselves that we are offsetting that cost by preparing many meals at the cabin in the fully equipped kitchen. There is even a charcoal grill for grilling up meats and veggies.
