FedEx plane crashes, burns in Tallahassee
Tallahassee Democrat

A FedEx cargo jet crash-landed short of the runway and caught fire early today at Tallahassee Regional Airport, closing airport operations and stranding dozens of passengers.

The three crew members escaped the burning Boeing 727 and were taken by ambulance to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for treatment, where a FedEx spokesman said they were in good condition.

The three-engine jet, FedEx Fight 1478 from Memphis, Tenn., landed a half mile short of the runway at 5:43 a.m., said Kathleen Bergen, an FAA spokeswoman at regional offices in Atlanta.

It wasn’t immediately know why the jet didn’t reach the runway.

‘‘We can’t speculate on the cause,’’ said Jess Bunn, the FedEx spokesman at company headquarters in Memphis. ‘‘The National Transportation Safety Board and FedEx’s own safety team will be investigating.’’

Michelle Bono, a spokeswoman for the City of Tallahassee, which owns the airport, said the airport would remain closed until the wreckage is cleared. There was no immediate indication when the airport would reopen.

"We are making every effort we can to resume operations as quickly as we can," David Pollard, superintendent of airport operations, said shortly before 9 a.m.

Thank goodness the people on the plane weren't seriously hurt!

Very scary. Glad to hear no one was seriously hurt!

Scary. I'm glad the crew escaped unharmed.

JTB - lame away with the Castaway jokes - there is a picture circulating of Tom Hanks scribbling on a rock, "Help! I'm stranded in Tallaha"

:( But good to hear no one was seriously injured.

I must admit I thought about Castaway too but I'm glad everyone is okay.

Once I learned there were no serious injuries, I breathed a sigh of relief and then worried: I hope no one's DCL cruise documents were on that plane!!!

I heard on the news tonight that they have found the black box and should be having a news conference soon. They also said that the pilots had some broken bones and were very lucky to be alive. We live 30 mins. from Tallahassee.

Snuggles - dd is in Tallahassee this weekend visiting my DS for her birthday....She is very close to you...and farther away from me...:(

Good to know that everyone is ok, but still very scarry!
