Do any of you budget minded folks have any advice for satellite tv? Are the only 2 companies Direct or Dish Network? I'm looking to spend less. Thanks.

Well to be honest, I got rid of the dish and my comcast due to cost. Paying 160.00 a month is to much imho. I have a wii system, use netflix, 9.00 a month and watch hulu. The only thing I pay for is my internet. Im probably not much help to you. It just depends on how much you want to pay. Jo

We have directtv Choice Plus, and only pay around $35/mo + tax. Right now they're offering free HD for life for new members if you switch to them. They throw in free HD DVR box, etc if you set up autopay. Dish is running the same promo, so directtv matched it. I've been with DTV for as long as I can remember (when did they come out - because I think it's been that long). We're calling tomorrow to see if they'll upgrade us to HD free (we've been wanting to switch) - if not, we're jumping to Dish for free, since we don't have a contract.

However - we don't now, and never have had the pay channels since my early 20's. I don't see the point. I have netflix to cover that, and I just wait for the HBO series shows to come out on DVD and rent them from netflix that way.

I'm with you on this one. I built a dedicated computer for the television so I can get Internet TV and have a good old rooftop antenna. On the computer, I use the following:

  • Windows Media Center
  • Netflix
  • Hulu
  • Boxee

We have had both and DirecTV is cheaper and you get more channels. It's not cheap exactly but it's cheaper and better.

I have to laugh because I suspect the grass is always greener. I am completely fed up with directv and ready to switch to dish!! They really are the two only options since we don't get cable in our area, and only have the lowest high speed internet. Our satellite is always going out and the customer service is terrible. Twice in the last 5 months I have had to call and I was on hold for at least 30 min to get through and then 3-4 days without tv before they can come and look at it. They actually said they would do me the "favor" of removing the $50 service call fee! I am so unhappy with them at this point. The dish network offer is looking pretty good to me!

You must have a discount - the regular price for that package is $65/mo!

We found the opposite to be true. We paid more with direct than we now do with Dish and we added the DVR and another tv and pay less than we did with direct for two tvs and hd programming.

So we have 3 TVs hooked up two boxes, DVR, and HD programming and pay $90 a month for Dish.

I hate the customer service at DirectTV. Our service goes out everytime we have moderate wind or rain. We also have one TV that no longer receives about 10 channels that it should...it just says searching for satellite signal 771. When I called to tell them that we aren't getting all of our channels, they quoted us an outrageous service call fee. I politely asked why should I pay them to fix their service that wasn't working properly (it seems to me that I should be having my bill pro-rated for the days that my service is out), but they said that they will not dispatch a tech unless you pay for a service call. :furious:

I have DirecTV also and am going to try and get the new deal that they are offering only to new customers. Let us know how you made out. My contract is up in 2 months so I will switch to Dish if they don't allow me to get the HD free.

Thats exactly what I do, I have the antenna fed into the pc so I can record the shows just like tivo, just about anything else can be streamed.
