Feb 20, 2011 - Presidents' Week - Mexican Riviera

Okay, I had to call DCL about something else and while I was on the phone, I got the movies. In no particular order, they are:

Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Gnomeo and Juliet
I am #4
Tron Legacy
Toy Story 3 in 3D
Tangled
You Again
Step Up in 3D
Oceans (also in 3D, I think)

Thanks for the update on the movies. Our kids are looking forward to seeing Gnomeo and Juliet.

I'm surprised that Toy Story 3 is still on. We were fortunate to watch the premiere of it on the Wonder last June- it was a midnight show, and the crowd was so excited. We had a couple of tired (but happy) kids the next day.

I was happy too, because it was the same night the Lakers won the NBA Championship- the Laker game ended at 11:55 pm, and I was watching it in our stateroom. As soon as the game ended, I literally ran across the length of the ship to get into the movie theater just before the movie started.

My niece, who will also be on the cruise, was 5 at the time and was having a show at her gymnastics. They had a presentation at the end and the teacher asked the kids questions before hand for the presentation (where are you from, what do you like to do, what do you want to be when you grow up). Most kids said Teacher, Baby Doctor, Pet Doctor, etc..., but my niece's reponse was "One of the Princesses at Disneyland that signs autographs". It was awesome!

I <3 your niece!!!

Anyone know if they have popcorn at the theater? There is nothing better than movie theater popcorn. popcorn:: I know there are a few movies that I haven't seen and would like to, especially in 3D.

I *think* it is for sale in the hallway outside the theater before the movie starts. Not positive though-- never watched a movie while onboard!!!

I know we're getting way off topic here but I'm so interested in the subject - maybe it's something a few of you might enjoy over a drink of the day - are any of y'all involved with FIRST Robotics for high school kids (it's not just for techies)? When I think of the skills needed to be an Imagineer I think of this program because it combines the technical, team and creative skills that go into being an Imagineer. One of the best things I've read by someone wanting to become an Imagineer who actually did was Randy Pausch's "Last Lecture" - very inspiring.

Sarah has been seriously involved with her high school's FIRST team for the last three years and this year is the team treasurer. Her HS has a unique campus where there are actually 3 high schools (separate buildings) in the same campus for a total of more than 6600 students! Because of this and the fact that we are a motor city suburb, the robotics team has a long and solid history. We will be attending the national competition in St. Louis and everyone is very excited.
It is actually Sarah's abilities in Math coupled with her creativity that I think make her ideally suited to be a Disney Imagineer and in fact... after I read Randy Pausch's book... Sarah and I visited Carnegie Mellon and this became her number one choice for college next year (fingers triple crossed). I actually do pancreatic cancer research at the U and was attending a meeting in Pittsburgh on pancreatic disease the day he passed away. It was a very somber moment; I have so much respect for him.

I'd love to talk to Elaine and Sarah about FIRST - I'm familiar with it and our high school has an active club but my kids aren't old enough yet, or so I thought. Just this weekend, one of my oldest's friends stayed overnight and when his dad picked him up, he was telling us they were thinking of forming one of the Lego Challenge teams for the younger crowd, so we may get involved sooner than we thought!

I love it when a plan comes together.

Oh, and I haven't seen or read The Last Lecture, but I suppose I should one of these days when I'm feeling like a good cry.

We have a STEM program at our Jr. Highs. Our high schools have SMERT. What is FIRST and how does it compare to SMERT?

Ugh. Stop me before I read another MR trip review, please!

It's not so much that it's "stressing me out," b/c I know we have fun on vacations pretty much whatever we're doing--we just like traveling and being together. I guess it's just kind of a downer to read people saying the food wasn't great, lines were long, not enough characters, etc., etc. Oh, well . . .

Anyhow, 10-day forecast for L.A. is now showing rain on Friday and Saturday the 18th and 19th (we're supposed to spend a day at Disneyland on Sat.), but I'm hoping that will change since those 10-day forecasts are not always accurate. At the very least, maybe the rain will have moved out by Sunday! :yay:

Betsy and Tad -- my 17 yo DD is a senior in high school and seriously considering aerospace as a career. She will definitely do engineering but hasn't decided yet on a particular field. I would be so grateful if Tad and Betsy's DH could spend a few minutes with her at the meet-n-greet and talk about what you do. What do you say?

I would be happy to talk and discuss the aerospace industry.
As a matter of fact a lot of my FE gifts are from the Sikorsky store, with helicopters and flight related stuff.
I work in the test field of aerospace, ground test, flight test component test etc. I would be happy to share thoughts and ideas with her.

Has anyone been able to find good Mexican Riviera door magnets??? I have wasted HOURS searching the boards and Google images. The list of DISigners on my bookmarked thread are 95% defunct. I want a cool Mexico themed something...with sombreros, etc. I found a cool postcard of the MR from when the Magic sailed it, and people have changed it to their
Wonder cruise (different dates than ours), but when I save it, it's teeny and the quality is BAAD. Not to mention I do not have the skill to change the text. I don't want to steal anybody's door decorations from our cruise, but can somebody point me the right direction?

thank YOU!

Did you fine the sombrero Mickey ears? I found them on one of the boards but can't seem to find them now. I have them on my computer at home and can mail them but not before tomorrow night. They print out on one 8.5 x 11

A lot of times the images you see on the boards are low res images so you need to go to the website were the full size images are stored. A lot of people use Photobucket. If you look at the list of designers there is usually have something listed next to photo-hosting site - this is where you will find the full size images. If you have something that just needs a text change I can probably do it for you tomorrow night or Saturday if I can get the full size image.

Thanks, Elaine, I'd love the sombrero ears! Do you know where an updated list of DISigners is? Then I can go and find their Photobucket work, or whatever. The list that I have is really outdated; I was afraid no one was making signs anymore!

Is there a plan for identifying other DISers on the cruise? I know there's a meet, (3:00, lounge by Parrot Cay, I think?), but any other way? Anyone have any ideas from other cruises?

OK, DUUUUUHHHHH. Where is the "smilie whacking the forehead" icon??? I scrolled down farther...down PAST the Cruise section...and lookee there...a whole section called DISigners. Sheesh! Sorry for being so dense.

I suggested people try to pick up a green Mickey paint chip from Home Depot - or make a small Mickey head in bright green. Attach it to a lanyard or hat, or something you are wearing. I have some extras that I will bring with me at 3 and will be happy to share them.

I will also bring a few extras as well, perhaps some pins or lanyards to wear them with. I'll probably put mine in my hat.

Vanessa - It's no problem for me. If you would like everyone to be in the FE for me let me know. If possible could you PM to me the names and favorite characters of whoever wants to participate (and which name goes with the birthday).

Beth

Beth,
I don't have enough posts to PM you so sorry, but it will be in the forum.
I would say Daisy or Minnie for Aria
And my favorite is Goofy (for more than one reason)

On the Transatlantic, we had custom lanyards made for us. I am actually doing that again with the Dis'ers on my June Dream cruise. It was great on the TA-- especially in the evenings when we went to the shows in Rockin' Bar D-- we all sat together & won every game since our group was so big! But.. I guess we are too late for that here...

Oh, I am so with you, Erica! Not that I would begrudge anyone their opinion, but I just don't need all that negativity! It seems like some people spend more time looking for disappointment than just going with the flow and enjoying themselves.

Hope that forecast changes for you. We have the dreaded "s" word in our forecast for next week right now (and it was sunny anid gorgeous the past couple of days here, but chilly), but I'm not panicking yet. It will probably change three times before then.

I was reminded today by our corporate website that I'm going to miss some of the fun things they do in honor of Engineers Week, then I realized we can have our own on the Wonder in Mexico! What could be better than that?:thumbsup2

Totally forgot about National Engineers Week - we'll definitely have to do something to celebrate.
