Feb 20, 2011 - Presidents' Week - Mexican Riviera

It truly is a Small Small World isn't it... we will be at the 3 pm meeting as well.
So does Peter like, does he like airplanes or does Greg? I am in the aerospace field and I have lots of opportunities to get little trinkets that one can't usually get anywhere else. I was also looking for an opportunity to get something nice(er) for one of the Fish extenders kids. Just to make it extra special. We got in late to the FE program, I don't expect to get something from everyone, but we do plan on giving a little something to everyone. Aria and I are looking forward to meeting you. My parents are in a room right next to us but can't remember their number at the moment. so we will have two doors to decorate too, we are gathering the supplies now.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Tad

Betsy and Tad -- my 17 yo DD is a senior in high school and seriously considering aerospace as a career. She will definitely do engineering but hasn't decided yet on a particular field. I would be so grateful if Tad and Betsy's DH could spend a few minutes with her at the meet-n-greet and talk about what you do. What do you say?

@gichicdoc - FWIW, my husband and I are both engineers at a large aerospace company which shall remain nameless per corporate policy. ;). We have materials science backgrounds and I have been there 25 years and would be happy to talk with your daughter if she'd like. :thumbsup2

With two boys, I have to find other opportunities to interest girls and women in STEM!

my dh probably won't be at the meet and greet as he is in charge of 'boy wrangling' by the pool while I take care of reservations etc but when/if we can meet up he'd be happy to talk with her. He actually works in high tech and not aerospace.

Sounds like we have a number of techies - I work at an advanced R&D company in Cambridge, MA. My background is software engineering. I've also been very active in getting girls and other under-represented groups interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

My dh is a civil engineer if she wants another engineering perspective (not quite as sexy as some of the other types of engineering). But if she's interested in dams, levees, water closets, reengineering municipal pools, wastewater treatment plans or such, then he's your guy. (Yes, he's been through a few jobs in his time. ;))

I'm a SAHM (stay-at-home-mom) but I was a math/stats double major in a prior life. Does that count? (I help with first and second grade math homework every day too.)

That counts in my book! I work from home on Mondays so I can help out in our fourth grader's class, and my husband works in class on Fridays - very important IMHO! :worship:

My Bro had a kidney transplant last year and when I was telling him about taking this cruise for our 25th anniversary he asked how to go about booking so I gave him disneys number and a week later he called and asked if I minded him and his pack crashing our trip. I was so excited, we have never gone on a trip together before and when he said he never thought he would ever live long enough or feel well enough to take a trip like this I cried. Life is good!

Woohoo! Geeks unite on the Wonder! :rotfl2: Love it!

Wow! This is terrific -- who knew?! What a great opportunity for Sarah - thanks everyone. Truth be told, Sarah's dream job would be as a Disney Imagineer but we both agree she needs a "back-up" plan.

Okay, I had to call DCL about something else and while I was on the phone, I got the movies. In no particular order, they are:

Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Gnomeo and Juliet
I am #4
Tron Legacy
Toy Story 3 in 3D
Tangled
You Again
Step Up in 3D
Oceans (also in 3D, I think)

I would love to be an Imagineer, too! If only I didn't have to live in LA or Orlando - love to visit but wouldn't want to live there. Hold on to that dream - I'm sure many Imagineers have technical degrees - just don't forget the creative side, too!:thumbsup2

I often say I'd run a ride for Disney if the locations were different, but, yeah, I'd miss the paychecks!;)

I know we're getting way off topic here but I'm so interested in the subject - maybe it's something a few of you might enjoy over a drink of the day - are any of y'all involved with FIRST Robotics for high school kids (it's not just for techies)? When I think of the skills needed to be an Imagineer I think of this program because it combines the technical, team and creative skills that go into being an Imagineer. One of the best things I've read by someone wanting to become an Imagineer who actually did was Randy Pausch's "Last Lecture" - very inspiring.

Thanks - my granddaughter will be thrilled that Gnomeo and Juliet will be playing. I wanted to see Tron but not enough to pay for a ticket - I just might get my wish.

I guess I have to join this discussion. Out of high school I also wanted to be an aerospace engineer (still do), but ended up going the computer engineering route. I currently work as a Software Engineer, not really as glamorous and I think takes a certain type of personality. I love it. If your daughter is interested, I can talk to her also.

As for working for Disney, here's my story.
My niece, who will also be on the cruise, was 5 at the time and was having a show at her gymnastics. They had a presentation at the end and the teacher asked the kids questions before hand for the presentation (where are you from, what do you like to do, what do you want to be when you grow up). Most kids said Teacher, Baby Doctor, Pet Doctor, etc..., but my niece's reponse was "One of the Princesses at Disneyland that signs autographs". It was awesome!

So our local radio station is giving away a Disney Wonder MR cruise. So all week long they've been having live feeds from the Wonder. Just helps build up the excitement. :cool1:

Believe it or not many moons ago my FIL had the opportunity to work as an electrical engineer at Disneyland. He is a Northern Californian at heart though and opted for Lawrence Livermore instead. Disneyland - Nuclear Energy -> if he only knew what Disneyland would become. :rotfl:

Wow, you just made our family very happy. We're going to be spending a fair amount of time in the theater I think.popcorn::

We live in a university town and every year at the Farmer's Market the local high school has their robotics team out showing their latest contraption. It's always fun to see. They also host the local robotics competition out of the university. Fun stuff and a great way to bring science to life.

So cute!!!

Ack, got to go pick up my dd from Kindergarten!

What radio station? I'm in Sacramento and would love to hear the live feeds.

Anyone know if they have popcorn at the theater? There is nothing better than movie theater popcorn. popcorn:: I know there are a few movies that I haven't seen and would like to, especially in 3D.

I think I read they have the prepopped stuff, so it is a little stale. Not like REAL theater popcorn.

Thanks! I was hoping that they would still be showing Tron.
