hi,
we are going to WDW on Sunday, and I am a nervous wreck. I hate flying at the best of times, but have now heard of terrorist warnings that are coming out of the U.S against commercial airlines.
Can anyone offer any advice on how they cope with their fear of flying?

Hi

As one who actually enjoys flying I may not be the one to offer advice but here goes:

Keep yourself busy - if your aircraft has seat-back TV you can watch a movie you'd like to see, take a favourite book that you would like to read again (saves buying a new book you may not be able to get into), if you are a football fan take a walk round the plane and you will probably see someone wearing a shirt from your team (or rivals!) so you can chat about favourite games etc.

Your doctor can also help with anti-stress tablets if you really are that bad with coping with flying.

Relax - enjoy a great holiday.

Best wishes

FloridaLol

JACKSDAD,
I am also a terrible flyer (hate it with a passion). However once you get to the airport you will realise that nobody could get anything on to a plane (especially a US bound plane).
A good tip I was given a long time ago was to look at how easy the cabin crew find it and that if there was anything likely to happen would they be stupid enough to board a plane twice a day and not like most of us twice a year.
A couple of large ones at the airport might do the trick and if not, hey if your numbers up your numbers up.
You could also try some 'calms' from the chemist, may do you some good at the airport.

Have a great time

The only advice i would give is a little thought - sept 11th happened with no warning - terrorist threats are usual wot they mean "a threat" and if they intend to make mass distruction and suicide it would be something without warning.

Sit back and relax and enjoy life - don't let the idiots spoil the excitment for you!!!

have fun!

JACKSDAD,

I'm also a terrible flyer.
Gotten worser with age i think!
I spent the whole flight there and back, with sickness, shaking,at one point thought the plane was going to come down!! all of it is in my head, like everyone as said, these threats are just threats, all the security at the airports now are 100%.
Even suitcases are being checked,my vanity case lock was busted off,has they had to check it...believe me i wouldnt of flyed if i thought something serious would happen, but i have every confidence in the security, and the conditions of the plane.

You can busy yourself, watching t,v,reading magazines, doing crossword puzzles,etc....or even writing down what you want to see or do,or even take a holiday brochure and plan your next trip ;) thats what i did!! hehe

If you are really bad,ask your doctor for something to relieve your nerves,or take Kalms.

Believe me,i dont think anything will happen!
Have a lovely holiday.
And take me with you lol.

Beth

Thanks guys for all your help.
2 days and counting. I love the idea of planning the next trip !!

Hi Jacks dad,

Can I suggest you take a look at the SOAR fear of flying forum, there are some great people on there including several pilots who will help with your fear.

Someone on here recommended

www.fearofflying.com

This site really helped me. The one bit of information that I held in my head on this years flight, was that pilots get lower life insurance premiums than the insurance salesmen that sell them!!!

I also find that a couple of drinks help and talking to the cabin crew about the fact you ARE scared. They quite often come round with a nip of brandy to calm your nerves.

Good luck, you will be fine.
Allie.

I always watch the crew onboard. As long as they dont look worried when the plane shakes or there is a different noise then I reason with myself that everything is ok.

It seems to work

Hi,

As a fairly frequent flyer, there really is nothing to be scared about.

Airplanes take off and land every day. Thousands of people fly as their jobs every day.

If the crew look nervous, it is probably because the crew manager is on board or the dip on who has to take the coffee into the flight deck is about to be announced !

If the aircraft has a fault would you think we would still be there ? Most problems are because there is a fault in the wiring systems. Just once in 22 years of flying have I had an emergency and that was just a 'fast landing' That is faster than normal because the flaps did not extend properly. All ended well as everyone knew what to do.

Watch the safety demo. It is instructions on how to survive.
Ask the crew if you are not sure
Tell the crew if you are really scared. Flight deck visits are normally out now but sometimes the pilots will find time to explain the flight.
Aisle seat for Take off and landing/ Window for cruise
Turbulance only happens when Cabin crew are serving tea and coffee.
Keep seat belt on all the time, over the top of a blanket when possible.
Have a walk about mid flight and chat with crew/passengers.
Drink loads of water/avoid heavy alcohol

Let me know your route and I will try and find the places you might fly over and so see from the air. Please PM me for details or anything else and I will try and help. Same for anyone else.
