So we are driving down for the first time. On our way down we are taking I75 and on the way up we are taking I77/I75 since we are stopping in Myrtle Beach for a few days.

My question is what are the best stops/towns/ restaurants /hotels that you have enjoyed on these routes?

I would love to hear them all?

Thanks:thumbsup2

We drive the I75 route - basically 2 x 12hr days.

While we don't do much as far as side trips we do do the following:

We always stop at the rest stations
- good for coupon codes for hotels
- let the kids run
- washrooms

We stop at BP gas stations (I guess this is bad now  ) as they take Canadian CC without requiring a zip code.

We tend to grab lunch on the go, likely a stop that will have a McDonalds and a BP gas station close by.

For hotels - for the price I like the Country Inns & Suites with Breakfast (hot & cold) you can find excellent coupons (see above)

I think that's it. Oh I highly recommend the "Along the I-75" book for rest stop, gas station, restaurant, hotel and speed trap avoidance :cool2: We use the book as well as a GPS.

If you are in to side trips, this book has one for every exit (almost) along the I-75.

I second the recommendation for Dave Hunter's "Along the I-75". It is great for finding 24 hr gas stations, etc. While it isn't as useful now as it used to be if you have a GPS for finding a Walmart superstore or whatever you might need, it is still worth getting.

In the past we have tried to split the day evenly, so we would stop in Sweetwater, Tn to eat dinner at the Cracker Barrel and stay at one of the hotels there. Now, we try to make the first day a long one, about 18hrs, and try to make it into Georgia so that we get to WDW earlier on day 2. We take our 5th wheel down now, and find a Flying J or similar place that allows truckers and campers to park in the back to get some sleep. So, i can't help you with hotel ideas, sorry. We try to get gas only from Flying J stations as the prices are competitive, and the coffee is reliably fresh and good - try the flavour shots or creamers that different locations have. (I'm a Tim's fan, and picky about my coffee).

Stop at aQuacker Barrel for supper. They are always clean and we wander the store and stretch our legs. Florida welcome station use to have free orange juice.

Keep this in mind the detroit bridge crossing on the us side is a huge mess with construction and the lack of good signage can mess with the best navagators.

YUP.....tell me about it! We totally screwed up there and had to drive in the inskirts of Detroit (totally a bad area) to get back on teh highway

we are plannign to drive down for the first time in february 2011, we are leaving from toronto area and basically hoping to drive straight thru (2 drivers) are there a lot of gas stations and rest stops along the route? my main worry is making sure we dont get stuck out in the middle of nowhere...

we have driven down 1-2 times per year for the last 7 years. We usually try to get as much driving in the first day, to hit Atlanta early the second morning. Our favourite stop is Calhoun, Georgia, where we stay at Country Inn and Suites. There is a Cracker Barrel nearby for supper, and the free breakfast in the am is good. We have also stopped in Marietta and Dalton. The Comfort Inn in Dalton is nice, and there is an Applebees and Cracker Barrel within a 5 minute drive.
I agree with Sigma and Striker, Along I75 is worth the money. We also hit the Florida Welcome Centre for a break, and the free juice.
