Favorite things to do in MK? (non-attraction)

What are your favorite things to do in the MK that are not rides/attractions? I'm planning a down day (end of September trip), and since we're staying at Bay Lake Tower I thought we could spend part of the day at the MK (or area resorts) casually doing things we wouldn't normally do... for example, have the boys get haircuts at the barber shop, watch the flag retreat ceremony, etc. I'm looking for some of those hidden gems that many people don't have time to stop and enjoy. Ideas?

We had DD's first haircut at the Harmony Barbershop and it was so much fun! I also had her silhouette done on Main St and I thought it was very reasonable for $8. You actually get two mirrored images for the one price.

We go over to Tom Sawyer Island. The girls like searching for the paint brushes. Even in the middle of the afternoon TSI always seems cool and is hardly ever crowded.

I know this is technically a "ride", but ride the trolley down Main St! Also explore the buildings around the entrance area. There are some hidden gems in all of them.

Its a family tradition since I was a little girl to get a new hat with very visit.. It sounds silly but I still have them all. Its cool to see how my tastes/interests changed. Then my parents would take us to different classic Disney rides and take pictures at the same spot to show how we've grown/how things have changed. Its something I'm now doing with my kids.

Besides that maybe you can take in some shows? See the parde so on your "ride" day you can skip it and get on some rides faster? Go on a hunt for hidden mickeys around the park?

Ooooh, all great ideas. The haircuts are a must for DH and DS, and then we pop into the chapeaux to get DS a new hat. It too has become a tradition for us.

We've never done the trolley, believe it or not, so that's going on the list! Thanks for the idea. And exploring Main Street buildings sounds cool too. I put Tom sawyer Island on my list even though I'd scheduled that on another day. It's probably worth doing it twice, especially on a casual day to relax.

I was also thinking of finding character meet 'n' greets we hadn't yet seen this visit.

Tom Sawyer island for sure! We go there first thing and it's great. Have fun!

I've never seen the afternoon parade & I like to eat at The Plaza Restaurant :goodvibes

Happy planning!

Make sure you grab a Dole whip or 2 or maybe 3 at the little place over by the Flying carpet and the Jungle cruise, can't ever remember the name of it, just where it is and how to get there. We always have 1 picture with Mickey every year, like the PP, just to see the differences, we have been all times of the year, pics of us all sweating with red faces and then pics with coats and hats on like we are freezing. We used to take a day to meet characters, especially at christmas time, different characters are out then than you ordinally see, or at least for us. My DD met Cinderella's wicked step sisters and mother last christmas. Also, my DD's like to take their hidden mickey book and search for those. There is also the mini golf if you like that sort of thing, they are kinda out of the way so it takes a little while to get there, so we do that on a slow day also. Water parks are really cool, my kids love the water parks there. Wow, my list could just go on and on. Have fun.
