Whats your favorite message board for photography? I would love to have a board to ask questions on so Im not bugging everyone on here all the time.

This is the only one I visit unless I am looking for very specific information. Usually even then I only read messages and never post anything. Many of the other boards are very rude and full of people that think that they are much more important than they really are.

This one and an internal one at work. So many of the others look down their noses at anyone who doesn't have multiple bodies and collection of high end lenses costing thousands each. That and the whole Nikon and Canon holy wars on some boards. It's tongue in cheek here, it's not elsewhere.

This board (and the one at work) has some very experienced, very talented people that we can all learn from along with some new people that we can help as well.

People on here don't mind being "bugged all the time". Always nice and very knowledgeable. Ask your questions. No need to hold back.

Oh, and by the way, I don't even know of other photo boards. This is the only one I have visited since I started taking photos again.

What did folks on other photography message boards say?

Just kidding :)

In my experience, this message board is actually very friendly to newbies and questions.

I'm not sure if you've tried asking questions on other photography message boards, but many folks on other photography boards are very annoyed when you ask a question that's been asked 100s of times already (ex. "I need a new point-and-shoot camera that has a super-fast shutter, is great for low-light / dark rides / my kids' sports, has 20x zoom, and costs less than $200", etc). Oftentimes, the answers will be very sarcastic, will direct you to the forum's search function, or tell you to read the manual. At least, that's been my experience whenever I read other message boards...unless I've just been hanging around the wrong photography boards. :confused3

I'm in the same boat. I recently stopped using a dedicated Canon forum (whose initials shall remain nameless ;)) because it's become non-stop gear snobbery and bullying of so-called "newbies". I really enjoy photography, unfortunately it seems there are a lot of people involved with photography that are unhappy people. Fortunately there's a nice group of helpful people here on the DIS! :goodvibes

Ain't that the truth!! You definitely need thick skin if you venture out on other boards.

On another board I frequent because it has a good Olympus forum, someone asked a simple question about the FL36R flash and was verbally attacked by someone because they were wasting their time and money using the 36 and only real photographers use the FL50R (which costs 3X the 36)

You do meet some nice folks on those other boards but be prepared to deal with the nastiness.

right! but that Canon forum (whose initials shall remain nameless :)) still offers good info about lens, lighting, etc., just ignore the main part with the gear snobs!

I can recommend www.photography-on-the.net. While it is technically a Canon board, the general photography advice and post processing forums are good for anyone. I find that most people on the board are very helpful and nice to even beginners. I haven't seen any Nikon vs. Canon wars really on the board either(possible because it is, as I mentioned before) a Canon forum.

I'm not sure if your referring to the forum I mentioned above or the digital picture but I can't say I've seen a lot of gear snobs on photography-on-the.net. In fact, most people discourage buying new lenses unless they serve a purpose. Many people come to the forum thinking their lens is bad when really its just their technique needs improvement.

I frequent POTN but i find it hard to get people to respond to my threads and have noticed quite a few other people who are discouraged by the same thing. I try to go on and reply to threads that have multiple page views but no one ever responds.

i've always been that way because in college, when we did critiques i always had to find SOMETHING to say about each person's work..especially when everyone else in the class were silent.

there used to be a great forum called the photobox. it was really small but the people on there were so nice and took the time to look at each thread and respond.

sorry i can't be of more help! but this is probably a great place to ask questions. :D

Photography-on-the.net is the only other one I go to. I find myself checking what's for sale on there more than anything else though.

I read the forums on DPReview. (Not sure if we're allowed to post URLs, so just google "dpreview".) I seldom post questions, but when I do I generally get some decent advice. I find it easy to ignore the trolls, but then I've had years of experience.

I'm not sure if you are looking for a brand-specific board or something more general, but I'm a big fan of both Nikonians and Nikon Cafe. I haven't had any experiences with people being nasty because I don't have the best pro gear and when I do pose a question on either of those boards, I've always gotten very pleasant responses and useful information.

This is probably the forum I frequent the most, only because it combines two of my loves in one place---but when I want more brand specific information (like lens recommendations, information re: customer service, etc.) I pop over to the other two.

Photo boards are usually divided up by either brand (canon/noink), photographic niche (strobists) or how it relates to other interests (Disney, scrapbooking, etc).

Then there are the "everything photography" boards for the people who get banned from all the polite boards (dpreview).

I find this board to be the most tolerant and the one that posts the most photos. Some other boards are heavy with people who know little, post much, and rarely seem to actually take photos. But man, can they upgrade to the latest equipment! ;)

This is the only message board I frequent. When I am trying to figure something out I just google what I am looking for.
