I'm at a brick wall with my 7 yo. Time to get some fresh parenting ideas. What are your favorite Parenting Books or strategies????

I own just about every parenting book known to mankind.

What issues are you trying to deal with?

I think 7 yo's are supposed to perplex us.:teeth: I know my 7 yo does, but then again, so does my 10 yo. I hope you find a book to help you with your 7 yo.:)

That would take hours to write about. I guess my biggest problem right now is his defiance. The 7 yo is the worst. He gets very mean and nasty. We had quite a day today. Ended up with both of us in tears!

Both of my boys just don't listenI think I'm talking to the walls. And then I yell and they tell me they don't like it when I yell. Well if they'd listen the first time! ARGH!!!!!!!!!

Then I start feeling like I'm just a terrible mother and well I'm sure some of you can relate to that downward self-esteem spiral..............

Um, YES, I can relate. :)

Absent of a specific diagnosis or issue (which we are now dealing with with my DD, 9) these are the books I would recommend:

The Challenging Child by Stanley I. Greenspan, M.D.
1-2-3 Magic by Thomas W. Phelan, M.D.
How to Handle a Hard-to-Handle Kid by C. Drew Edwards, P.H.D.
The Challenging Child by Mitch Golant, P.H.D.

I have more but these are a good start. :)

{{{HUGS}}} I know how hard it is to be a mom some days.

How to Talk so Kids Will Listen, and Listen so Kids will Talk. My copy seems to be missing, must have had a friend in crisis, so I can't give you the author.

GREAT book. Of course, my dd's only 6! ;)

Ah so sorry for your troubles! I did employ the 1-2-3 Magic, that someone had mentioned and while it did not "solve" the mouth (12 & 6yo dds) it did put me back in the drivers seat. I found that doing things swiftly, ie go to your room and stay there until ??? worked for me. I kept trying to fall into the trap of talking to much to the girls when the decision is final.
Also I use some of Dr. Phil's advice. Find your childs "currency". What will motivate them in the right direction.
Good Luck! I learn something new everyday it seems.

I loved John MacArther's book on parenting.

1,2,3 Magic is a good choice. I don't feel it works for everything but it can help get things back on track and help the parent follow through.
How to talk so kids will Listen by Adele Faber is another good one. We actually attended a 7 or 8 week parenting class using her material and found that to be very helpful. So far for DD who is 7 it has been smooth sailing....6 was out toughie!

Never used a parenting book in the 17 years that DD has been with us.

My parents used the "book of hard knocks"!;)

Defiance - my oldest son at age 7 to 9 -- to a T. He took a bit of a break for 10 and 11 and now at 12 we are right back there. :)

He has always been one of those kids that needs tons of physical activity or he starts acting out. At about age 7, I started encouraging him to run laps around our house whenever I felt he needed some alone time. Or maybe more accurately I needed some alone time. ;)

After a year or so he moved to running laps around the block. Sometimes in the winter it is more of a stomp through the snow around the block, but wearing down that excess energy really does seem to improve his behavior.

Although I have not read them yet, James Dobson's Dare to Discipline or Strong Willed Child may be good.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I'm jotting them down and taking my list to the library. Sometimes just reading a new way to tackle an old problem really helps.

FOJMO-Be very greatful that you've been blessed with DD.

It never ceases to amaze me how siblings, all raised the same, react so differently.
