When cruising out of San Diego, where do you prefer to stay and why? Also, do you spend extra days in SD touring about? If so, where/what are your favorite places to go, things to do, places to eat?

Thanks!
Kate

We have stayed at the Wyndham San Diego Bayside a couple of times and it worked out great (just walk across the street and you are at the cruise ship port). This time we are trying out the Springfield Suites which is also just across the street.

The USS Midway is also right there and Seaport Village is a short walk away. We have done both of those in the past. Plenty of restaurants in the area.

Springhill Suites is very convenient as you just walk across the street to the port. The free breakfast was full of folks heading to the Wonder.

There are a lot of fun things to do in San Diego whether you stay in town or rent a car to explore the area.

We love San Diego. If you have a couple of days, you can choose to visit the Zoo, Balboa Park, Coronado Island (The Del Coronado), Mission Beach, Sea World, Old Town San Diego, Cabrillo Point National Monument, Seaport Village and the Midway.

I'm confused. I look at the Mirror web site and San Diego and it shows a Resident Inn near the port, no Bayfront Hotel. If I do a Google search for Bayfront it does come back with that hotel on the Marriott site, but looking at the address it shows 900 Bayfront Court for both hotels, can anyone explain, is the one location doing both Marriott bands or is it switching from Bayfront to Resident Inn?

We stayed at the Hampton Inn once, lots of train noise. Is the a problem at Springhill Suites?

For our Baja cruise next spring, we decided to go all out (and have the vacation be more than just about the cruise).

Our cruise is from a Sunday to a Friday so we’ve booked the Lodge at Torrey Pines for the two nights before the cruise and the Fairmont Grand Del Mar for the two nights after the cruise.

Both aren’t super close to the cruise terminal but it shouldn’t be too much to get to either via Uber. And they both just seem like such super nice places.

We’ve already stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado on a previous trip and have already been to the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, Sea World, and Old Town. We’re not planning on revisiting any of those places on this trip (FWIW, I believe all of those are worth doing, but, for us, this trip is all about R&R and being pampered).

Sounds very relaxing. I hope you will post back after your cruise and give an update on your impressions of the Lodge at Torrey Pines and the Fairmont Grand Del Mar.

I've never cruised to/from San Diego since I live in California, but I've stayed at the Westin Gaslamp (formerly Horton Plaza) several times. I love the location -- lots of restaurants/shopping/nightlife, an easy 10-15 minute walk to the ocean. I stayed at the Marina Sheraton once, which was lovely and convenient for the airport and what I was doing in SD, but it isn't walking distance to anything except the harbor.

Things to see/do: Seaport Village (my favorite), Gaslamp/Horton Plaza area, USS Midway, Coronado
With kids and time to explore: the zoo, Sea World, Legoland
I love just walking along the water between Waterfront Park and Marina Park. There are all kinds of interesting ships and vendors and people watching. There's also a BBQ place around there where they filmed scenes from Top Gun if that sort of thing interests you. lol

Resident Inn and SpringHill Suites share the same building, which is why they both have the same address. The SpringHill Suites side is located near the marine while the Resident Inn side is located more toward the city side. If you want a good view of the Wonder from your room, then the SpringHill Suites side is the better option, but you may get a partial view from the Resident Inn side as well.

We stayed in the Resident Inn side because we had a total of 5 adults and 2 children (6, 2), so we had a 2-bedroom suite (found a great deal that made it much cheaper than getting 2 rooms) and did not have a view of the Wonder until we went down to breakfast and surprised the kids.

This was the view from the SpringHill Suites. It was wonderful to wake up and look out the window!

We have never cruised out of San Diego, so perhaps this is not the most convenient location, but our family really enjoyed a stay at the Hotel del Coronado. We did their bonfire and smores on the beach one evening and had an unforgettable time.
