I've only recently begun to read historical novels. I loved all of Diana Gabaldon, read some John Jakes and Phillipa Gregory. Any suggestions?

I like Edward Rutherford (Sarum, Russka, The Forest, London).
Yes his are good too.
I also like Barbara Erskine.. she has many historical ones i.e Lady of Hay
Also Jean Plaidy.. dozens of books
For an Egyption slant look at Pauline Gedge.. love them all.
ALso Wilbur Smith has 2 good Egytption ones as well

I'm making notes.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I love "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett and anything by James Michner as well as all of Edward Rutherford, Phillipa Gregory, and Diana Gabaldon. I also enjoyed "The Agony and the Ecstasy" by Irving Stone, "Trail of Tears" and "Cold Mountain" by Charles Frazier. There are so many good historical fiction books out there.

I also loved Gabaldon's Outlander series! If you liked that, then I suggest Crowning Mercy by Bernard Cornwell. It is great! My dad got me hooked on both of those and so he also recomended the Sharpe series also by Cornwell. There is something like 12 books in the series. he said he has loaned them all out to about 5 guys at his work and they too all loved it. I am getting ready to start the first one, Sharpe's Tiger. Someone else mentioned Pillars of the Earth that is another book that comes highly recomended by my dad, he also loved that book. Can you tell what my dad likes? There are a couple more that he told me to read that I did and I really liked them but the titles are slipping my mind right now, I will look them up and let you know. I also like these kinds of reads...seriously get Crowning Mercy by Bernard Cornwell...great!

Ok, I remember one more, Empires of Sand by David Ball. That was a great book, I loved it, couldn't put it down. It is about cousins in Paris in the late 1800's and the city comes under siege and they kind of go in different directions, but that is all I will tell you.

Ok, I remember the other one now, As The Crow Flies by Jeffrey Archer. GREAT, GREAT book. It is about a little boy growing up in London and takes over his families produce shop, it reminded me a bit of how Harrods got started. Truely a great read!

Sarah Donati's "Wilderness" series is amazing!!! The books in the series are:
  • Into the Wildernesss
  • Dawn on a Distant Shore
  • Lake in the Clouds
  • Fire Along the Sky
  • Queen of Swords

I believe that there will be one more book in the series. It starts out in the late 1700s and the newest book ends in 1814. Each of them is kind of long, but very good and worth reading.

"Pillars of the Earth" is my favorite book of all time. I like almost everything by Ken Follett, for that matter; he's an excellent storyteller and his characters are very well-developed.

Two favorite historical fiction novelists: James Alexander Thom and Edith Wharton. Thom has some great books about the Revolutionary War era, Lewis and Clark, and American Indian history. Follow the River was his first book that I ever read.

Morgan's Run, about the British prisoners that were deported to what would become Australia. I don't remember exactly who wrote it (Colleen Mcsomething, I think)

I'm still reading the "Outlander" series. I'm reading "The Fiery Cross" at the moment. It's been a very long read and my least favorite of the series so far.

I loved Colleen McCullough's Roman series. I can't remember all of the books, but it starts with "The Grass Crown." Maybe I'll re-read those when I'm finished with this series.

My husband loves the Michael/Jeff Shaara series. There are a number of books ranging from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, Mexican, and First World War.

Also, try a book authored by James Alexander Thom. He has a number of them and I found his book titled "Follow the River" interesting.
