I love to read and plan our trips to Disney World. Last time, I bought Unofficial Guide and WDW With Kids (both are 2004 edition). I was thinking of buying a new UG, and maybe the Birnbaum one. How is the Birnbaum guide? Is it worth buying? What about the one that's "for kids, by kids" ? I have an almost-5-yr-old - would he enjoy that?

TIA!

Go to your nearest Borders or Barnes & Noble, get a cup of your favorite beverage, grab one copy of each of the most popular guides, find a comfy chair and spend a couple of hours flipping through them. :) :)

Don't have either one! And I do have two small children who won't let me spend a lot of time browsing. If I can possibly buy things online, I do it! :)

We used the Birnbaum By Kids for Kids guide on our last trip--our kids were 5, 7 and 8 at the time. They loved it and wore it dog-eared before we left and made notes in it while we were there. I'd recommend it...haven't bought it for our trip in November 07 yet, because it's a SECRET, but plan to wrap it up and hand it to them in the car on the way to the airport.

We bought the PassPorter for this trip--jury's still out on that one, but so far it's fine. I may return it for my trusty Birnbaum's regular guide yet!

Order away and enjoy!

Although Birnbaum's is nice for the pictures, it doesn't do a whole lot for me as far as planning goes. I suggest trying Passporter. I love mine, and buy a new one each time I'm planning a trip. I pretty much own every planning book out there, and this is the one I MUST have!

As far as Birnbaum's for kids. My kids (DD 7 and DD 10) like it pretty well. I'm not sure a 5 year old would get alot out of it though (my youngest DD was 4 1/2 when I got the first one, and she wasn't interested in it for more than a few minutes of looking at the pictures).

HTH!

I took them all out of the library. I like the Unofficial Guide the best BY FAR. The "for kids by kids" book was cute. Nothing new for ME, but even my 4 year old liked the pictures. If your kids are able to read and write, I think they'd love it. Lots of kid-related notes, places to answer questions "favorite ride:______" etc.

DD just got the Birnbaum's "For Kids by Kids" for her 7th b-day -- it was part of a scavenger hunt to tell her that Disney World was her present. She's older than your DD so she can read it alone, which she does, a LOT! Even for a 5yr old, though, she can look at the pictures, plus you could read it with her, and it makes them feel involved in the planning. In fact, DD brought her book and a pen and paper to our planning meeting so she could make sure we were doing thing to her satisfaction! As someone else said, there's also a section in the back with places for the kids to make notes about the things the did on their trip, too.

Personally, I don't get anything out of Birnbaum's other than the pictures, either. Love, love, love the Unofficial Guide! I also picked up another book, "Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World" (or something like that) that I'm going to do while we're in the parks -- they have ones that will work for the younger kids.

I love the Passporter. It has lots of good info as well as places for you to plan your trip. I buy one for everytrip. I own several of their e-books as well. My 2nd choice would be the Unoffical.

On our last trip (a while back) I had 2 guides. Birenbaum I think, and the pocket UG (WDW with kids). I loved the pocket one because I could put it in my pack and have it with me. It did not have as much information (I used the other one for most of the planning), but it was great to have. The UG also provides good reviews of the rides including age appropriateness and the scary factor. The kids loved the kid guide, and it made them feel as though they were part of the planning process, so I would recommend getting it.
