We are doing a Private Affair with Chef Gordon at the beginning of September. This will be our first time. There are so many choices for food.

What is your favorite?

Thanks!!!

Hi there - we're dining with Chef Gordon on the 6th of Sept! We had a heck of a time deciding what to have - although my husband isn't a big fish eater, so that cut down on his choices a bit.

Gordon's crabcakes are a MUST! I've known of non seafood types who have raved about them.

As for the entrees, we are partial to the seafood, but have enjoyed the filets as well. I think DS had the pork tenderloin once and loved it!

And the desserts.....OMG!!

In short, just about anything you choose is sure to be a hit. Enjoy!!!

Crabcakes, Crabcakes, Crabcakes. They are the standard against which all other crabcakes are measured.

DEFINITELY the crabcakes!!!! They are so yummy! Chef Gordon gave me the recipe and I have made them at home. Delicious! ::yes::

Have to agree on the crabcakes for starters they were wonderful ( I wonder if Gordon gets bored doing them LOL). I asked for him to do something with a reasonably solid white fish and left it to him to decide what was the best available at the market that morning.

Please post the crabcakes recipe! :D

We're looking forward to having dinner with Chef Gordon someday.

We make these often too! They ARE the best!! The recipe was in a recent issue of the DVC Vacation Magic , but if you missed it:

Daufuskie Island Crab Cakes

1 lb. crab meat
2-3 ribs celery
1 small onion
1 med. green pepper
1 sleeve Ritz crackers
1 C melted butter
Texas Pete hot sauce
Old Bay Seasoning
Paul Prudhomme's Seafood Magic

Pick shells from the crab. Fine dice all of the vegetables and saute in butter until cooked. Mix the crab meat with the vegetables and cool. Grand the crackers in your hand and mix with the crab mixture. Add hot sauce, Old Bay and Paul Prudhommes to taste. When cool enough to handle, shape into patties and saute until golden brown (if mixture is too loose to shape, refrigerate for five minutes).

Devil's Elbow Dressing

1 C Mayonnaise
3T pickle relish
Texas Pete hot sauce (to taste)

Mix all ingredients in bowl. Taste and adjust for seasonings. Will store in refrigerator for one week.

Serve with a full bodied Chardonnay or Champagne.

::yes::

I would also agree with the Crabcakes--they were awesome and really a meal in itself.

We have tilapia as a main course, which was excellent.

But for dessert......................we had creme brulee'. We are huge creme brulee fans (and critics) and really enjoyed his version! Yummy!

We will always have crabcakes and leave the rest to Chef Gordon, unless our guests have a preference....oh and we choose desert.
YUM! I think this will be a must for our fall trip to HH.

The crabcakes are a must. I have even made them myself, but we still got them this past trip. Our two favorite desserts are the chocolate pots de creme and this time we had an incredible caramel fondue. Also, he made for us this time this carrot -- ginger -- shrimp in cream dish that was heavenly. My husband and I both are not big carrot fans, but this dish was fantastic. Enjoy!

OMG He made those for us a few weeks ago too! They were fantastic!!! I kept expecting that the carrots were pasta! This is a close tie to the crabcakes, I think. !!

We've enjoyed A Private Affair the past four trips to HH and have always completely enjoyed all of Gordon's creations.

As already proclaimed- the crabcakes are a MUST! We've had grouper, filet, tenderloin and a different dessert each time. We always ask Gordon to select the wine(s). He is also eager to prepare anything you'd like- even if it's not included on the "suggested" menu- so don't be shy about suggesting your own personal favorites. He is very talented and is always a most gracious host.

Enjoy the experience!

You guys are going to have a great time. I just missed it. He is either not there from 9/12-9/17 or he was all booked up. I will have to wait until next year.

Crabcakes! And he had mussels that were the best I have ever had...all of the seafood was excellent. Don't miss the caramel fondue either. It is to die for.

Thanks for your replies.

Do you ask him to decide on the menu or do you specify each dish? I am leaning on just asking him to include the crab cake pick all other food.

What is the setting like? Is it formal or casual, since we will be the only family there? Will the kids be bored by sitting there? He said that I can bring happy meals or something like that for my little ones.

Thanks

It is a casual setting. The dinner is held in Signals snack bar at the beach house. Gordon does a nice job dressing it up with table cloth, candles and wine so it does feel like a special event. The backdrop of the Atlantic ocean adds to the ambiance.

We had our two grandchildren (aged 3 and 18 months) with us this year- we took mac n' cheese and Gordon heated it in the kitchen for us and prepared ice cream and cake for the girls dessert while we enjoyed the cheesecake. They were fine during the meal.

Enjoy (and say Hello to Gordon for me!)

We have done A Private Affair for the past three years, starting with our kids ages 5, 8, and 11. The first two times we kept our youngest (DD) with us. We brought her something to do (i.e. new sticker book). The two older ones (DSs) and all three this year would play ping pong, watch TV and play games in that room at the beach house. They would wander in and out to our meal, it is very casual. They would always join us for dessert (wonderful caramel fondue this time). I would pick out a lunchable at Piggly Wiggley to eat for dinner that night -- a rare "treat" for them. It has become "A Private Affair" tradition. Tell Gordon the family with the Lunchables send their greetings.

I love the crab cakes (with champagne!), but my new favorite is Gordon's ginger shrimp dish served on "carrot" linguini. It is awesome!
