Favorite Excursions - Alaska

We did three privately, and all were awesome - Chilkoot Tours - Train up/Bus down; Harv and Marv - whale watching; and Island Wings - Float plane to the Misty Fjords.

If you want something unique, the Mountain Point Snorkeling Adventure in Ketchikan was really cool. In the same port, the Neets Bay Bear Watch by floatplane was also wonderful!

Bus combo's with White Pass train (Liarsville or Yukon's Caribou Crossing)

I can't chose my favorite, they were all different and exciting. In Skagway I did the train ride with a 8 mile hike to Laughton Glacier (booked through DCL). Juneau I booked a helicopter glacier walk tour from an outside company, and then went to Mendenhall Glacier on our own. Ketchikan I did the Misty Fjords Floatplane trip (booked through DCL), and the Alaska Coastal Expedition (also booked through DCL).

By far the BEST excursion is the dog sledding on the glacier. ITS EXPENSIVE!

But GREAT!!!!

Not to burst anyones bubble, but, I have heard the train ride wasnt great. I didnt do it just heard.

We did everything privately.
Chilkroot trail hike and float - Beautiful scenery and great hike followed by a soft float down the river to the end of the trip.

Harv and Marv - whale watching - we went out and the Fog was so terribly thick that even though they tried, we ended up turning around and having to give up because it was really impossible to see anything. They refunded us before we got to the transportation back to the ship. Excellent operation.

We did Island Wings - Float plane to bear watching - excellent excellent excellent. The plane flies low and you can see the seals on the rocks - the bears were out catching salmon right by us it was just as I had hoped.

We booked with Coastal Helicopters for a helicopter tour - they took us to Herbert Glacier and we were literally the only ones on the glacier at the time. It was an unbelievable experience.

I can't choose which was my favorite - they were all amazing - I will say this, it was by far one of the most expensive trips ever. All of the tours were very pricey. I just kept saying - this is once in a lifetime, this is once in a lifetime. . . . . I wouldn't change a thing but it was all much more than I expected.

The only thing that was reasonable was the lumberjack show which my ten year old son LOVED. ha ha ha

We did the Bear Country and Wildlife Expedition this past week in Ketchikan. It rained the whole time, but that's what ended up making it great because it's better weather for the bears. We saw groups of them almost the whole time. Our guides told us that the previous week it was unusually warm, so the wildlife was not active and the tours saw nothing. So it's a bit risky and could be a completely different experience from group to group, but for us it was amazing and we loved it.

We did a private tour into the Yukon with Beyond Skagway tours. Excellent. In Juneau we did whale watching thru Juneau Whale Watch. We had a nearly private tour...only 14 of us on the boat. Saw a bunch of whales and even some sea lions. Awesome experience. I highly recommend both.
