Well, can you tell I'm dying for spring???? I'm getting a bit of cabin fever so I took a quick spin around the snow laden garden this morning to see what I could see.

Well, not much! LOL! But.....I did look at the textures and patterns of my evergreens! So beautiful in the winter scene! So green! So promising!

Then I had to decide which was my favorite.

Is it the rhododendron.....with its leaves pointing in a downward frown waiting for the sun's warmth to touch it???

The beautiful holly bushes.....fat with berries standing upright in the winter cold.....I have several....both varigated and not....

Is it the mountain laurel.....so dainty and upright....

How about the mighty fir.....my daddy planted the one in my mom's yard.....it was a wee thing when he planted it....now it's over 10 feet tall....majestic.

After much consideration, I chose the holly....something so Christmassy, so cheerful about a holly bush in the winter...braving the snow and the bitter cold.

Take a gander in your garden.....tell us....what makes you smile!

No evergreens in my landscape. :( But, I do have some lilacs that have buds that are getting VERY fat! :)

We are closer to the spring then you are at this point. No snow and the grass is starting to show the hint of green.

Planning to spend the morning giving the russian sage a major haircut.

Oh my, Dixie, I'm green with lilac envy! ;)

The holly sounds very nice Gina, almost festive! Get out that digital camera of yours! ;)

Well, my rhodo is covered and wrapped against the elements, also the cedar hedge, but the Colorado Spruce looks lovely when it's branches are laden with snow. I've been treated to the sight of cardinals flitting in and out of it's boughs, so I'm pretty sure it's sheltering a nest. Definitely my favourite evergreen! :)

I like my Butterfly bushes.. the flowers are beautiful and the butterflies just fly around... Also, it seems to flower all summer.. I have to plant in my northern exposure what does well.. I also have St. John's Wort that does real well with bright sunny yellow flowers...

I think my favorite though is anything fragrant.. so Lilacs and Mayflower bushes make me smile.. but they are so short lived..Of course now of these are evergreens.. LOL

I'm not sure of what evergreens I do have.

I do have rhododendrums - I call them my weathermen. All I need do is look out the living room window and see how much of a downslope the leaves have to tell how cold it is. I couldn't believe how tight they got to the branches a week or so ago when it was so bitter cold.

I have hemlocks and aborvities and andrometer too. I used to have cedar trees and two gorgeous blue spruces ( :( ). There are a few evergreens, I know not what they are.

I understand exactly what you are saying about the textures and patterns and even the different shades of green. All waiting for our admiration if we just take the time to look.

I can't choose.....

In a way, this is the time for evergreens to shine! No other competition! And they look so wonderful against the snow!

My mom has this evergreen....don't ask me what it is....but it has thick, long needles and grows like a bush....about 4 feet tall and equally as wide. It prickles a bit because the needles are so long. But it's a beauty! I forgot to mention it because.....A) it's not in my garden .... and B) neither of us have a clue as to what it is.....perhaps I will post a pick.....
