I need to buy a new camcorder so I have no idea what to buy. I would be primarily be using it for trips to WDW and family functions. I have 3small children so I would be taking movies of them at their soccer games when their old enough to play. I don't know if it would be better to get a mini DVD that could go right into the DVD player or one that takes the minitapes and the camcorder plugs into the front of the TV. What do you have?? What do you suggest?? Prices?? I'm thinking of around $500. Thanks

When we looked into them, we decided on either Canon or Sony. We went with the Sony because it had this nifty Easy button on it. It's GREAT!

Definitely go with miniDV tape, not the camcorders that record directly onto DVD. You want your precious, original video of your most special moments on the best quality, longest-lasting media, and magnetic tape beats DVD, hands-down. You can easily take the video off of the miniDV onto your computer for mastering, and then burn it onto DVD from there. That's definitely the best approach.

The latest version of my camcorder now runs about $220-$250.

For $500 you can get a really top-notch camera.

Thanks Bicker!! Sorry I was on a business trip. On the surface DVD seems like a great way to go but the quality and length of recording time seems to be seriously lacking. Thanks for the suggestions.

I love my mini DVD Sony Handycam - between the easy button and just popping the DVD's in our player or a envelope to Grammie & Grandpa it is great. This is the 3rd Sony Handycam we have had and so far this is my favorite.

I like the camcorders that record directly onto dvd because it drives me crazy to try to get stuff off the camcorder and onto the computer and then burn them, etc. I don't like to mess with all that so directly onto dvd is
a dream come true for me.

:thumbsup2 Ya, what she said. This was another big factor for us.

I have a MiniDV Sony HandyCam. I went with this over the MiniDVD, because I like to burn my movies to computer and then add effects and transitions. My aunt has the MiniDVD HandyCam and has had no problem with it. She really enjoys it, and loves to just pop the DVDs in right after recording to watch the finished product.

We got a Canon miniDV this summer. I did a lot of research and tape is really the way to go for quality and longevity. Easy to view, edit, and copy too! We got the Canon Elura 100. It was about $379?

Check out the photography board on the DIS. :) I started there then branched out.
