What began as a possible solo journey turned into a father/daughter trip. (Which PS - meant a lot more to me than I ever thought it would because as a busy wife, mother of two, how often do you get solid days with just your dad?!).

Our journey started out aboard the Pacific Surfliner train that takes you through parts of the CA coast that you almost never to get to see. It was a beautiful. Of course it also takes you through the backyards of inner cities in the greater Los Angeles area! The train took almost 6 hours and probably added about 2 hours onto our trip, but we didn't care because there's virtually no stress involved! We both hate traffic, and my vision actually impairs me from driving that distance.

We arrived in Anaheim and took the ART to DLR. That was our first mistake. We wanted to go to the DLH entrance but it doesn't take you there, which meant we were left at the main entrance and security lines, with our roll on luggage. This wasn't ideal as my dad had pocket knifes and his "medicine". We had to explain to security and then had to be escorted out through the DTD entrance. Whew. But it was frustrating.

We checked in and got upgraded to a deluxe view room, which overlooked the pool, in the Fantasy Tower. We got our AP special promo fast passes and dining vouchers and headed out!

We arrived on Sunday, 11/13, around 3pm, and the parks weren't too bad! I was happy about that. Between pulling fast passes and utilizing SRL, our whole trip was flawless in terms of limiting waits, which was important for my ADHD father! We didn't want to see the parade since we were doing the holiday tour Monday, so we explored DCA and did SRL at Grizzly, pulled FP for ToT, I think we took in Soarin' somehow, too. Went back to DL to watch the fireworks and while beautiful and touching, it didn't have the same "wow" factor as Halloween Screams. Waited in the FP return line for HSM only to have it break down...oh well. We did get to ride it a couple other times during the trip, but the visual effects seemed very dim and not at all spectular like I had heard. Still felt primarily like an all dark roller coaster.

Monday, we awoke early to a) check out of DLH and check into GCH b) to utilize MM. My intent with the hotel change was to simply check it out and also because a new reservation also meant new FPs and new dining voucher! PS the Grand is beautiful. I probably like DLH better, but proximity wise, I'd choose the Grand when I go again.

At MM rope drop we went to ToT and then Soarin' then headed over to RSR where we used SLR and walked right past an already 40 minute wait, only to end up in the same car! Nice! We ate a cozy cone Mac and cheese thingy and OMG, yum. We both loved it.

Went back to DL to meet up with our tour peeps. It felt very quaint, very VIP. Wasn't feeling the staticky ear bud thing and both my dad and I ended up bored. Timing wasn't really on our side because it was at 2pm and it was probably the hottest, most crowded time in the park. Every time she stood in front of a holiday overlay attraction and talked about how neat it was only to NOT put us on it, I had a teeny tiny internal tantrum. The parade seating was marvelous. Plus, it was a good group of people, who were fun to talk to. The collectors pin was precious, and I don't even collect them (but maybe now I will!). But the hot chocolate? Cmon Disney, it's like 90 degrees, who wants hot chocolate? Improvise people! The parade was adorable and I really wished my kids were with me to enjoy it.

After that we went to DCA to use some FP. Oh ha, last time I was there, there was a line wrapped clear around the whole flipping park for a RSR FP and they were gone by 10am! Monday, we walked up - WALKED UP - to the FP kiosk at like 11:00 and pulled FPs for a 5:30-6:30 return. Score! RSR right after dark, for the first time, it was excellent!

Then we treated ourselves to the WOC dessert party. It was great. No surprise there. We did it last month and I'll save up to do it every time we want to see the show. It's fabulous. I won't give away too much from the holiday show, but I was sincerely touched by an unexpected gesture...I began to tear up during Let There Be Peace on Earth - because, well, LET IT BEGIN WITH US!! It was a great show. Disney's imagineers are just geniuses, in epic proportions.

Tuesday was MM at DL and we worked our FP/SRL like pros and just knocked out so much. We did everything we wanted. Seamlessly, really. It's a lot different when you're not worried about the needs and wants of two little people, ya know? Just my dad and I, power walking, park hopping, inappropriate joke telling...it was SO MUCH FUN. Stopped at Elias and Co. and had them make custom stockings for my kids. They turned out beautiful, nice, well made stockings with my precious little snowflakes' names etched on the top in cursive. Swoon. They will hang at every Christmas as long as I live!!

Like I said, I will treasure this trip forever. My dad is still young and healthy, but I don't take my folks for granted. I know there will come a day when my dad won't be here and I have this trip to look back on, and laugh about, and probably cry about. Or who knows, maybe this was just the first in what will now be an annual father/daughter Disneyland trip?! Only time will tell.

Xoxo

You are so right about looking back on this trip one day. I am very happy for both of you. What a joy!

Loved reading your TR !

That's great that you were able to do the trip together. Great memories for you. Too bad about the Holiday Tour. I've heard others have not been very pleased with it either. Glad you liked the WOC Dessert Party.
My sister & I are doing a DL trip in a couple of weeks, taking our 86 yrs young Mom. We're all so excited !

I'm glad you and your Dad had such a good time.

Those memories with your dad are precious. I'm glad you took the opportunity to spend that time with him. We had a big family trip for Thanksgiving 2010. My dad had been saving up to take us all again "and pull out all the stops" as he liked to say. He died unexpectedly on Easter 2013 and never got the chance to go back. Every time I walk past the rocking chair on the porch on Main Street I remember my dad rocking in it while people watching and resting his feet. I'll never forget it and will cherish those memories forever.

I didn't even think about that. It's a great idea if you don't mind needing to move.

Great trip report and looks like you both had a great trip! Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I'm so sorry to hear that about your dad. I feel blessed that my both my parents are still healthy and active people, but I've experienced enough unexpected tragedies to know that doesn't always mean much.

I'm also trying to not take MY health for granted. One reason for this somewhat spontaneous trip is because I'm possibly facing an MS diagnosis. I postponed my MRI and went to Disneyland instead! (Don't worry...I rescheduled). But this whole experience has just reminded me that none of us know where our lives are going, where our health may be in a few years time, etc - better start doing the things we want to do now, right?? Yay!!

I wouldn't have done it with the whole family, but with just my dad and I, it worked out really well. We actually had assumed that when we checked in to the GCH that we'd have to leave our bags at the front desk, but there was actually a room ready and they let us check in at 8am. So it was PERFECT. And those FP are super valuable, I think, because you just save those for the nighttime once FP are typically gone. I got to use one of mine for the late check out at ToT, when they don't normally distribute FP for that.

Thanks so much for sharing. I want to plan a trip for my dad and I soon. He loves Disney and is the reason for my love of Disney and probably my siblings too. It's something I plan to do in the next year or two. I'm going in two weeks just my sister and I and my dad is pretty jealous (he is going for a hip replacement surgery next week.. just had the other hip done 3 months ago.. and then is getting a new knee in early spring) so he couldn't have come this time, but will be a bionic man when we go!

Sounds like you had a great time with your dad!

Thanks for mentioning the Pacific Surfliner train. I was not aware of it and just looked up the details/route/etc. I think maybe my son & I will take this from LA to Solana Beach and right back again to get off at Anaheim. Taking a train along the coast isn't something we would likely get the chance to do again.

What a great idea! If the schedule worked out for lunch and a walk on the beach, I'd recommend Fletcher Cove Beach Park and Pizza Port for lunch. Both are within walking distance of the train station.

I enjoyed this post very much. Thanks for sharing this special trip with us. My dad passed away a little over a month ago and your trip report made me pull out an old photo album. I am looking at a photo from the one time my dad took my sister and I to Dland which was about 40 years ago. In the photo we are riding in what we called then the "buckets" which was the sky ride, and we are on the way to Fantasyland from Tomorrowland (Matterhorn looming behind us). My dad was not someone who craved going to Dland like my sister, mom and I. (We three females have been hundreds of times over the decades.) But in 1975, dad agreed to take sis and I just that one time, and thus I remember it well. We made him laugh so hard that day, and he knew how to have a good time. Mom was much more careful with money, and so we were on a short leash when visiting Dland with her. Dad, though, he let it rip! We ate at a sit down restaurant. Unheard of for us. We'd been strictly baloney-sandwiches-at-the-picnic-table-outside-the-gates sorts of visitors. With dad it was Tahitian Terrace, and he ordered teriyaki steak, the most expensive thing on the menu. We rode all our favorite rides, and it was extra fun for us to share them with dad because he hadn't been since he was a teenager. Just a great day I will always remember.
